I recently bought Call of Duty 2, and have been playing it in single player mode. But am frequently (not all the time) bugged by laggy game-play, now it is obvious it is the PC, as I am getting these problems in single player.

But I just don't understand why. I am able to run BF2 on a 64 player server on medium settings with NO lag!
So why is my PC struggling with Call of Duty 2? My PC specs are below, note that i have recently upgraded RAM from 512mb to 2GB!

Processor: Pentium 4 3.4Ghz HT
Memory: 2048MB PC3200
Graphics Card: ATI x600 PRO (perhaps it is this that cant handle it, but I seriously doubt it, as BF2 runs so smooth with great graphical display)

I wondered if the PC was getting a little too hot also, because I have heard the fan making some serious noise, and it has crashed to desktop once in about 4 days

Also I don't really want to have to spend any more money on PC after just upgrading RAM.

Please help me! Please!

Also I generally find that it lags while playing as the Soviets, perhaps the snow is causing lag? Compared to when playing as the British in Africa, where i suffer hardly any lag?

But I still do not know how to fix the problem.

try defragmenting your pc

clean up some space

download and run a program called CCleaner

try low setings and low res

see if that works

maybe its just time to upgrade.

as I remember there is an option in call of duty to switch between 2 versions of DX or something like that.
The higher version looks better but its unbelievably demanding. Try doing that.

I even used the "optimal settings" function, the game identifies the systems specs and sets the graphics to the highest settings possible without affecting performance. But it is affecting performance!!! Surely the game feels my system can handle the settings. And I feel it should certainly handle the graphical settings, with ease!

I only recently Defragmented my hard drive and it does not require doing again, so thats not the problem.

Also I cant find this DirectX option you talk of.

Thanks for your responses anyway. More suggestions please.

maxwell I dont have the game any more so I cant tell you that option is exactly. But there is one and it should be under video settings probably.
Here is link from gamespot:

...running under DirectX 7 will do miracles for your computer's performance. Expect to see your frame rate double, if not triple.

EDIT: just because Im a nice guy:

Tweakguides wrote:

Render Method Preference: This option allows you to choose between DirectX9.0 and DirectX7.0 rendering methods in Call of Duty 2, or allow COD 2 to automatically choose one for you. For more details of DirectX see the bottom of this page of my Nvidia/ATI Tweak Guides (the information is identical in both guides). Basically selecting DirectX9.0 (DX9) gives you the highest quality images and special effects in Call of Duty 2, while selecting DirectX7.0 (DX7) reduces the quality of some of the effects in the game in return for a significant boost in performance on most systems.
