Ok, in short my sisters downloaded something that screwed her laptop up and then proceeded through the router and messed all 4 other computers/laptops in my house and left them with an boot error which meant windows wouldn't start.

On the laptops and the computer that only has one HD I was forced to just re-install windows and that was fine, however on the 2 remaining computers I have re-installed windows on to a different HD in the hope of atleast being able to recover some of the data.

This seemed to be do-able when I found that the whole of the previous C: drive was intact and was now the D: drive, however whenever I go

D:\Documents and Settings\"User"  it says

D:\Documents and Settings\"User" is not accessible
Access is denied

Obviously this is because these folders where password protected, so the question is, considering I know the passwords is there a way for me to gain access to these folders?

you should be able to rename D:\ to C:\ again... I have not dome this in a long time.. I kinda fotgot how to do it..

try this:

To turn D:\dos into C: , enter:
  SUBST C: D:\DOS
If you enter SUBST by itself, a list of the current substitutions will display, as illustrated below:
  C:  =>  D:\DOS
To cancel a substitution, enter:
  SUBST C: /d

Check to make sure you have adminstrator rights when you are signed in. Sounds like a nasty trojan or rootkit. When you run your AV (after you get the latest updates) make sure you are disconnected from any other computer and the internet. It is extremely important. I once had a very similar issue a long time ago and I have not touched P2P stuff ever since. BTW AVG was what got rid of it. I had Norton installed at the time. What a piece of junk that was.

No what you have to do is take ownership of the files it is a windows thing.  You cannot access other users document unless you are the owner of the documents.  What you need to do to fix it is right mouse click on the documents and settings of the person who's files you want and click on properties, then chose the security tab, click the advanced button, then highlight the persons account you want to have the permissions then click on the owner tab on the top, highlight the check box at the bottom that says "replace owner on subcontainer and objects" click ok, this will take aver an hour or so to complete but when it is done you will be able to copy and view all files located in this directory.

Apologies, I don't think I made myself clear (either that or I'm mis-understanding).

After this virus/trojen got onto my computer I couldn't access windows, all I got was something about the boot.ini being corupted.

With a little help from the internet I tried to use windows recovery mode to fix this but got no luck.

So I installed windows onto a different hard drive (in the same computer) and that's where I am now. The old install (the one that was infected) is still there I just want to get at some of the files.

What was the old c: drive is now the d: and what was the d: is now the c:.

The problem I'm having is getting into my old documents and settings folder ao I can copy all the important files/folders onto a DVD (which I know I should of done before now) after I've got all of those I'll just be wiping all the HDD's and installing windows again.

Still, thanks too all so far.

This looks like what I want to do, however when I try and find the "secruity" tab I can't see it, I have  General-Sharing-Customize.

Edit: After some playing around with the sharing tab I can get into the actual "user" file, so I can see the folders (Application Data, WINDOWS, Desktop, etc) but can't access them and can't use the same method as before to get inside them.

That is a good bet. It sounds as if it is spread pretty deep. I recommend a clean install. Only you can determine how important thos doc/seetings are verse possibly bringing corruption into your fresh install. You are lucky enough to have a spare drive at least. How are you setting your HD's up?

On my PC

400GB WD S-ATA drive which I use for windows and general storage/music/programs(PS/Premire)
300GB WD IDE drive which stores all big one times use files (patches/big mod files/uncompressed video)

Those are in my system right now,

2x75GB WD raptors which I use almost entirely for games
150GB SG IDE drive that basically doesn't get used

Those I took out so I wouldn't have to mess around with them as I was trying to work out what was wrong, I'll put them back in and format them before I re-install windows.

On the other computer there's just two 300GB drives with a lot of work files, that computers the one that is actually more important to recover as much as possible off.

You probably have simple file sharing enabled and cant see the security tab or you have XP Home edition which has very limited security.  If you install that HDD in another computer with XP Pro you can use the method that I described.  If you do have XP Pro to enable the method I described open my computer, click on the tools option, then folder options, then click on the view tab, scroll all the way to the bottom and see if the simple file sharing is enabled if so unselect it then you should be able to see the security tab now and continue using the previously described method.

*Note*  To change these permissions the drive must be formatted NTFS
