Background: I lost my license plate about 3 weeks ago and haven't gotten around to getting a new one yet.

Turns out, someone must have taken the plate and added it to their car. Now it's towed, and i get a letter telling me i need to remove it, and that the charges will be billed to me to have it removed. Looks like i have a few phone calls to make bright and early tomorrow morning.

Has anyone gone through a similar experience, and will i ultimately be liable for the charges?

If you didn't report the license plate lost, yes, probably.

Hmm, weird. One time someone called my house and left a message on the answering machine, in a high-pitched/helium-induced voice asking me to "come out." More verbatim it went:

"Hi, this is Bella. I was wondering if Martin could come out. Thank you."

Weird as shit, considering 1) I don't know any Bellas 2) I'm not gay 3) I was out of the house the whole time. oO

This is what you do,

First report this to your Local Police Agency, have them contact the impound yard.   They'll run the vehicle's VIN number and ShaZam! The towing agency will figure out that the current plate doesn't belong to that vehicle.

part of the resolution:

went to the police station, for another reason: my car was towed because of snow emergency parking rules, and i was unaware (typically they put up signs on every street, letting you know, but they failed to do it, making me pay $150 in fines and towing charges, fucking assholes), and they told me to go to the dmv. I went to the dmv, they said there should be no reason why i should be charged for this, so they photocopied my license and registration and told me to send it back to them by mail. also, put in writing in this letter "As you can see, this vehicle you have is not my vehicle. Please dipose of this vehicle as you would normally. Please refrain from sending me any more notices." something to that effect. I'm going back in tomorrow to the DMV to get new plates and the fact that they have those (soon to be) void license plates should make this no longer my problem. I'm going to double check with them before i send the letter, but this might be ok.
