Okay so I need some serious help. I can't figure what to get for my new machine.

Should I go with this mobo + cpu pairing?

EVGA 122-CK-NF68-TR LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813188010

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819115003

Or, these two (i'm leaning on these two for both performance AND price):

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ Windsor 2.8GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103769

MSI K9N4 SLI-F Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 500 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813130071

I'm really leaning on the AMD. I could save like 200 bucks off the total price, and low price is very valuable to me since I'm only a teen.

If you want performance, go Intel, no question. If you want to save get the 6400 or the 6300.

I have the Intel E6600 and EVGA 680i, and I really, really like it.  Dont hesitate to get the AMD though.  It is probably a better value, and it still kicks ass.

If you ever want to go sli, definately get the 680i.

What's SLI anyways?

The mobo I posted with the AMD CPU is sli ready.

If you are not planning to overclock in detail you could save a good bit and go with a 650i chipset/intel.

Yeah, but not as good SLI. Not so many PCIe lanes.

The Intel setup will be much, much better. The EVGA board is very nice, I've got one and I can OC my E6300 to over X6800 speeds quite comfortably with it.

The AMD setup will not be better value. It won't be anywhere near as good as the Intel option. So I would definately hesitate before buying an AMD system, it's second rate technology.

*edit*

Snap! - You beat me to it.

The 680i chipset can be a bit expensive, so I understand your dilema. Why not go for it's little brother, the 650i? That'd save you $100+.

Here's a fairly nice one, much nicer than that grotty MSI board anyway.

The choice is your but read bellow

I got a

Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe - Nvidia nForce 590 SLI + AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (AM2)

and my next door neibourg as a

Asus N4L-VM DH - Intel 945GM & ICH7-M DH + Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 - 2.13GHz

and we both have a Nvidia 7600GS...mine from LeadTek and his is from BFG

we both have XP MCE 2005...and we play mostly the same games....

My PC cost $355.92 LESS and we had 4 FPS difference in BF2...

That's not a proper comparison of CPU speed though is it? It's not going to make any difference having a higher end CPU in BF2, because it won't be taking advantage of it. The strain is going to be on your GPU. For a proper comparison you want something far more CPU intensive. A more CPU intensive game would do, or a 3D render or encoding some video files - but not BF2. My E6300 runs BF2 no faster than my 3700+ did, but it runs everything else MUCH faster.

Do you both have the same monitor and play in the same resolution, with the same settings?

Turning FRAPS on should also show the difference, no?

Slightly off topic, but a better cpu would be the thing that would help you out with FRAPS right?

True, but it could still give quite misleading results when comparing 2 different CPUs. BF2 is not a good CPU benchmarking game.

Well, I've decided to go with the 2.4 GHz C2D, along with the 650i. The other stuff I'm getting is in my sig.

Thanks guys. It came out to a total of 2100 dollars! Damn good!

That'll be a nice system. Are you planning on getting another GPU to SLI? If not that PSU is way over the top. Something around the 500W mark will be plenty, even with OCing etc.

Also make sure the RAM is at least PC6400.

Don't get 3 74GB raptors... but get a single 150 GB one and get like 2 250 GB drives in raid 0. That's uber performance.
