im thinking about buying a new video card, possibly NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX, cause my current one, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE, cant create a decent shadow, tree, or smoke effect without losing about 20 fps. the comp expert in the house (dad) says that we have no need to upgrade to a dx10 card cause most games dont use dx10 thus the difference in gameplay will be minor, PLUS he says that it also depends on the game's ability to create good graphics or something like that. should i try to convince him to get an upgrade and that it'll make an improvement on my comp?

Specs:
Manufacturer: HP Pavilion 061
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Hard Drive: 290 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519)

EDIT: p.s. if ur advice works, ill give u 2 karma

Doubtful the PSU in your machine could power an 8800GTX. It requires a minimum 450w with 28A on the 12v rail. From what I can Google, yours has 350w and 25A tops.

i concur. get a 7900gs for now, or, better yet, get your dad to build you a good PC.

first step is to get dad to agree that you need something better than the 7300LE...once thats in the bag you can haggle for exactly what card.

If you do spring for a 8800GTX please consider this; A GTX costs about $100 USD more then the GTS and only has an improvement of about 10-15 fps. If you step back and think about that you would have some extra money to get a new mouse/keyboard, games, sound card (this I recommend the most as apart from graphics, sound is the second most important part of gaming).

If you want a DX10 card with lower power requirements and a price that your dad might agree with, wait until next month when nVidia releases the 8600 series. Then get an 8600GT or GTS for $150-250.
