So I have a couple questions.

1)I just got new RAM, 2 more GB's to add to my previous 2 GBs (total of four).  It's the exact same stuff.  I have microsoft XP professional edition (32 bit i believe), but I also have windows vista ultimate edition (64 bit), do I wait until Vista, or will windows recognize it now.

Basically, now or later.

2) Also, is there a program or some way to make sure that I didn't get a bad stick.  (I know I could plug each one in one by one and see if it boots, but I don't feel like doing that).

Thanks in advance,

Google memtest, best ram tester out there i know of, and windows XP if im not mistaken should recognize 4gbs of ram.

1) XP will recognize 3.9999GB of RAM, so yeah add it now.
2) There's programs like Memtest86, but you have to buy it. I'm sure someone here knows a good free memory testing program. (Or just Google it.)

also, when I booted up (and pressed ctrl + alt +delete), it says that I'm using I'm using 347/4702M down in the corner, which is 7% of my memory (roughly), however when I boot up the Nvidia control panel it says that I'm using 16% of my memory (which I think was what I had when I only had 2 GBs).

Any ideas?

shiiiit, also in the "system properties" it says I only have 2.75 GB of RAM...

EDIT: also what memtest version should I download.

Another small problem, I don't have a floppy drive

Launch Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Information - what does that say you have ?

I like your use of the word 'small'...

As you don't have a floppy drive, download the bootable CD image (ZIP) - you'll need to burn it to CD with something like Nero.

Total physical memory 4,096 MB

Available Physical Memory 2.27 GB

Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB

Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB

Page File Space  4.59 GB

EDIT:

and I do have some "run nvidia memory module test" in my bios.  (Nvidia 680i something or other made by Evga.)

4 gigs for the page file?  Sounds a bit excessive, and by chance does you graphics card borrow your system ram?  That might explain som, but not all of your missing ram

Not to my knowledge lol (if you're referring to AGP appature? size, I have a PCI-e card.)

No, what i was referring to is a card with something along the lines of "expanded ram up to 256mb or 512mb" something along those lines.

Hmm... It could be a bad stick... The "Total physical memory" and "Available Physical Memory" are never the same, but it shouldn't be losing over 1.5GB... I know it's pain, but probably the quickest way to test which stick is bad is to install them one at a time (I assume it's 2x1GB you've added) and then check to see how much ram windows is reporting.

EDIT: just saw you last post - if you haven't been getting that kind of thing before installing the new ram it's definately looking like you've got a bad stick.

fuck.. Well I'll give it a shot...

If I do have a bad stick, will it just not POST or what? (when I stick them in one by one)

It depends how bad it is. If it's totally fubar, yes it probably won't even post, or it may just show up as not a full gig, or it may just cause lots of crashes and errors.

Have you downloaded memtest yet ? (and did you see my edit to earlier post - you need the bootable ISO CD (ZIP)) - testing each dimm individually with memtest is going to be the most thorough way of checking them - but it will take some time...

I just downloaded it, and .6% into the test an error popped up (cannot write between x and x)....

EDIT:

I'm guna take the new stuff out and see what happens.. feeeck

what the hell, I've run every different configuration with memtest and I only get errors when all 4 sticks are in... could it be a problem with the slots on my motherboard??

Christ this is frustrating

NO NO NO you do NOT have bad memory!!!  Windows cannot use more than 3 gig of ram efficiently.  The "lost ram" you are counting IS being used by windows, but its being used to address the ram that is listed.  So when your memory test program requests a memory address, it fist gets sent to the 3-4gb range to find out where teh address of memory is located, then it gets redirected back to the actual location of the memory and by that time the memtest program says thats not right and throws an error.

Ive delt with this at work a ton with pompous graphic artists saying they NEEEEED more ram...but they dont..they need to stop all the crap running in their task bar and all he windows blinds type programs making their skreen soo darn purty.

The problem is the 32bit operating system environment...that only leaves enough memory addresses to reach around 3gb. Move over to xp64 and it will be a bit better but you still wont see the full 4gb...you might only loose 256mb or so...  From my experience in Windows XP 32bit running 4gb of ram will make your system run slower than using 3gb of ram which will be barely faster than running 2gb of ram....now vista 64 on the other hand....HOLD ON TO YOUR KEYBOARD cause its going ot utilze all 4gbs and it NEEDS IT!!  That OS is such a hog and games realy do not perform as well on vista as xp...mostly cause drivers suck right now...i keep flip flopping back and forth and getting frustrated that that just a few weeks ago released SLI support for 7800gtx in vista...and it sucks..im sticking wiht xp until i got a quad core cpu...

Looky here

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778.aspx

Says xp up to 2gb...but if you modify your boot.ini with the listed switch it try its best to use 3gb
