My parents said they will let me have a laptop if I build it. A barebones notebook is the closest possibility to making it from scratch (If you know of something like that, tell me as well.)
So, do you know of any trustworthy site (newegg, zipzoomfly, amazon, etc.) where I can find one?

Thanks.

when you get it finished, tell us how hard it was to build. I'd like to know.

yes it is. Laptops are almost useless for gaming(unless its for school) considering heat problems, limited room and the cost for one. A pc is the better choice. Is there such a thing as a barebone laptop?

I disagree, my laptop plays 2142 and BF2 fine, and it was only 1300AUD. (has an x1600 mobility)

All the alptops I have built (much easier than building a desktop BTW !!!) I have sourced from these 2 places.

http://www.rjtech.com
http://www.excaliberpc.com/parts-cat_id … -4547.html

while some people show their lack of experience with DTR (desktop Replacement) notebooks.. they are indeed quite fast.

I have to admit that I love the Asus Z84JP whitebook - C2D, Nvidia go 7600, Sata 3.0 up to 4GB DDR2 17" WSXGA+ screen and it also has HDMI out. barebones all for $895.00 USD at Excaliber. I have put together quite a few of these and damn.. they are sweet .. and easy

Also check out the Clevo barebones from RJ they are the ODM for Alienware, Voodoo, FalconNW, and other high end OEMs. The Clevo M590KE is SMOKING FAST has a 20" screen, the option of RAID and SLI 7950 GTX graphics.. although VERY expensive and not really very portable.

Just a suggestion when and if you buy a barebones notebook.. ALWAYS order the optical drive and have them install it.. sometimes they use special little screws that you just cant find. I also always order the internal Mini PCI WIFI card from them too.

Nope, you were misinformed.

I built a Compal Hel-80 barebone laptop.

It has a T2500
2gb ram
GO7600
SATA HDD

Its so easy to build one

Go to notebookreview.com, they have tons of info on laptops and go to mwave.com, they have really good bare bone lap tops.

I have been thinkin of gettin a powerbook...I guess just because I am working with photoshop, paintshop pro, flash, dreamweaver and other adobe software. I just thought a powerbook would be way better then a notebook? ALthough I also thought of a notebook for playing bf2 on the road lol.

This is not intended for gaming, and yes, there is such a thing as a barebones notebook.
Oh, and BTW, I found a laptop DIY site:

Thanks a lot! You may be the only person who has been helpful!
Anyway, my budget is capped at about 600$ for now, so I'm looking at some of the smaller ASUS ones. Tanks for the optical drive tip!
