I don't know much about computers, but I am fairly sure I need a new graphics card.

Any suggestions?  Is this enough info?

CPU Type                 AMD Athlon 64, 2000 MHz (10 x 200) 3000+
Motherboard Chipset    VIA K8T800Pro, AMD Hammer
System Memory             2048 MB  (DDR SDRAM)
Video Adapter                NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700LE  (128 MB)
Monitor                            LG Flatron 1715S  [17" LCD]  (1513293044)
Audio Adapter                Creative SB Audigy 2 (WDM) [NoDB]

Thanks in advance

That is a very good point.  I can go a bit over £100.

AGP or PCIe?

Er, what is this and how do I find it out?

we need to know the power supply

I don't see that on Everest - where else can I find it?

7900gs 256mb

I've had a quick scan and the best price I can see is £106 from dabs.com.  Anyone used them?

Thanks for all your help, guys.  I really appreciate it.

From here

Im assuming we can only go AGP.

Maybe this

The reviewers seem to like it!

AGP 8X it is.

http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Qu … 7,42220000 - yes, they seem to like it a lot!

Now how do I find out what the power supply is and what difference does that make to the card I go for?

ok - so if I take the side off the box it is a Suntek AM608B1 - 300 WS switching power supply.  Max total output wattage 300w.  Is that the relevant bit of info?

Cheers

Does it happen to list the amperage of each rail, specifically, the 12v line? That sounds like a cheapo brand, which are not known for their truth in rating PSUs.

And I know people here are not exactly tech savvy, but LOL at anyone thinking there has ever been a PCI-e FX series. NVidia has pretty much put the whole FX series mess behind them, and focused on re-releasing some of their better chips on PCI-e.

This bit?
+12V 16A
-12V 0.8A

Thanks

Damn, I... had something for this

according to a quick google search, the card needs 20A on the 12v rail.

I am not sure how much that 4A is gonna hurt?

Well, as your motherboard has a AGP interface, I suggest

ATI Radion X1950 Pro 512MB AGP8x

or

NVIDIA Geforce 7800GS 512MB AGP 8x

I have both cards, running in my 3rd and 4th system. The ATI is a little bit faster than the Geforce if it comes to benchmarks. In game there is a diffrence of 5-10 FPS, not worth mentioning.

As you have a NVIDIA so far, I suggest you stick with this brand for upgrading, otherwise you´ll get some issues concerning the drivers.

About the CPU, well you dont have too many choices there. Is you mobo socket 939? If so, find a AMD64 4000+

Well, according to some random techie "With inadequate power the PC can do a variety of things such as suddenly turn off , reboot unexpectedly, crash with or without a blue screen error." So I don't want to go there.

Thanks for the suggestions, Slayer. The power supply is too piddly for both of them, so I am going to have to bump that up a bit.  Any recommendations for power supplies?  I understand that the manufacturers can be a bit flakey with their specifications.

Not sure if my mobo socket is 939, but I don't know that I want to get into upgrading the CPU as well.

Should do u, pretty good brand and all, but as everyone finds u can get carried away with these upgrades mate, and e.g if u are on a socket 939, ur paying a premium for older technology to.......

That PSU (or atleast one similar) plus the card that Sl4y3r suggested:

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products … ;OrderBy=4

Should do ur rig a lot of good for about £120 mark depending what specific card and PSU you choose

Edit: shop around actually I didnt notice they where not all the X1950

PSU: I run Ethermax, 650 - 1000 Watts, dont know the exact series. Those PSU´s are ok, havent had any problems so far. I guess a good 550-600 Watt will fit for your system.

CPU: well the 3000+ is ok. Not one of the highend parts though, but I guess with enough graphic and memory powers you´ll be ok. Stick with it

I guess you have to spend around 300-350€ and will get a good, above suggested, GPU and a PSU.

Having had a bit of a look around, I think that Hiper 530W PSU seems generally well received, so that is what I am getting.

I am going to go for an XFX GeForce 7600GT card.

Thanks for everyone's help with this - I'll let you know how it works out.

All put together and working well, though after the usual bit of frustration due to not spotting that the 7600 has a power input that the old one lacked.

Thanks for all you help with this - its a major improvement to the way the virtual world looks.
