Tough call Lowing. You got a few rather recent skeletons in the closet that I'd have serious difficulty skirting around on the old 'peace loving and tolerant people' front.

The narrow mind of some people, reading some of the comments in this thread it`s almost like some of you are sorry this didn`t escalate into yet another armed conflict for you to feast over on prime time television, i pity you

I`m pleased to see them being released

Me too, I posted an anology however that went unchallenged.........if you read up you can find it. I am also glad they are released, but my problem is, there is too many people in here that seem to think that it should be over, that Achmdfgjegpwgfoihdpjjdad should not be held accountable for the hostage taking in the first place. Just like he did 25-30 years ago.

Your analogy holds if the Iranians were in the wrong. Unfortunately we will never know whether they actually were or not. It will be interesting to see the No. 10 press releases over the next few days and interviews with the soldiers themselves.

Most people would rather avoid a war, and given that he isn't on the verge of invading Poland, it might be better just to give him a light slap on the wrist, rather that provoke him.

At least Ahmadinejad is letting 'em go home.  He played like a chess master and now he will be listened more carefully when he talks at the UN.

They were in the wrong regardless of whether the soldiers were in Iranian waters, so really his analogy stands up quite well.

Even if they were in Iranian waters international maritime law requires them to be given an opportunity to leave. The lack of consular access also puts Iran in the wrong - though it's an interesting contrast with how the US treat prisoners, that does not make it acceptable.

But I think Ahmadinejad scored big points here.  He showed to the Muslims "Iran is better than the West" (I'm not saying it), and he said to the West "you owe me now".

I have to admit - Ahmedinejad played his card perfectly this time round. Way to humiliate a major western nation. I wish Downing St. would fucking say something meaningful about all this. The suspense is killing me.

PR Stunt Extraordinaire:
a) Abduct 15 British soldiers rightly or wrongly (unproveable);
b) Impress the Arab and Muslim nations by doing this to a major western power - showing Iran to be 'on a par' with them;
c) Parade them in normal attire, eating, drinking and chatting - healthy and unharmed (unlike in orange boiler suits and sacks on their heads): giving an impression of moral superiority;
d) Respond publicly to British diplomatic vertures - playing up the whole 'diplomacy works' card for all to notice;
e) Release the captives in time for a Christian religious holiday (how beneficent) hailing it as a 'gift to the British' and that 'they were forgiven' - maintaining the 'we were right' stance to the arabs and muslims;
f) Tony Blair states that the UK 'bears Iran no ill will'.

All against a backdrop of 'diplomacy doesn't work' with respect to their nuclear ambitions and the debacle in Iraq. Nanci Pelosi visiting Syria was the icing on the cake.

Game, set and match. The man has balls as big as churchbells, whatever about his crazy ideas.

^^ That is what I meant when I said it couldn't have turned out better for Iran. Don't forget he was testing the British will as well. He will have a benchmark now to be able to gauge how far he might be able to go.

To some degree I guess. I think it was obvious that Britain took the lead on this side, it's not like anyone thought we wouldn't support them.

He did the right thing.  He did better than other people.  That's not proud, it's just admitting he did right this time and that's enough for him.
