Ok, i just wanted to throw a few clips together before you flame me for using it. No doubt someone will. Anyway on to my problem; Vista is my OS - Fraps saves movie clips in AVI format (Audio Video Interleave) When you import them into movie maker (As video clips) they will only play as sound files. Any ideas to why?

If not pointing me towards a decent file converter would do. I could just convert them into WMV format as i know they will definitely work.

I have re-installed fraps since changing to Vista. Where would I get the codec?

Yes, It depends on what type of file you save it as. Stop hijacking my thread, unless you have any usefull input.

This is for crappy video:

There is a lot of math you can do to find the best bitrate but here's my recommendations for compressed media:

Code:

Screen Size Bitrate
----------------------------------------
320x240 384-512 Kbps
640x480 1536-2048 Kbps
HD-720 3072-4096 Kbps
HD-1080 6144-7168 Kbps (7200 = DVD bitrate)
It's pretty much a trial and error thing but I find those values work really well with game footage.

Hope that helps.

...

As for NO video at all:

I don't remember my version of fraps using a codec, it saves as uncompressed.  But if newer versions are using a codec reinstalling should solve it.

Beyond that it could be that the video is there and just not being shown because of a broken overlay in the video drivers or maybe the colour controls are all turned down.

I've had problems with the new nVidia control panel with regards to video, so you may have the same issue.  Only thing I found to solve it was to remove all the video drivers and then reinstall.  Even on my new 7900 card.

What kind of card are you using, ATI or NVidia?

I'm using a NVidia GeForce 7900 GS to be precise

It's nothing to do with that my graphics card. It's windows movie maker not supporting AVI files as video where as movie player will. I cant even find a decent converter..

I had some problems with my new 7900 but it turned out to be old drivers.  Seeing as this is 64 bit Vista install I doubt it is from old drivers still on the system.

Well, you can always try a video converter like VirtualDubMod and here is a great tutorial on how to use it.

The tutorial is for VirtualDub which is open source, VDMod is an updated version to include better support for MPG2 and VBR audio.

I use VDMod all the time to handle AVI files.

Hope that helps.

Yes and no. I can't unzip the file after download.. Fate is against me. I have a video converter but the quality is poor.

for me, when  I made a DVD this past year, I used .AVI files in Windows Movie Maker, Is it Vista that's giving the problems?

Give this a try, it will show you everything you need to know about your AVI file:

http://yaai.sourceforge.net/

AVI files use a control code called FourCC to indentify the codec used.  Running this will tell you the exact codec you need to use the source files.  If you can post the codec used I'll be better able to help you.

I highly recommend you get VDMod installed, anyone who has used it or VirtualDub will agree it is a stellar application for AVI editing and conversion.  The thing is a swiss army knife of processing.

This may also help you get some additional resources:

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?convert=AVI%20to%20WMV

Feel free to PM me Alex, I've been working with digital video and audio for nearly 20 years.
