Should I go for this upgrade?

I currently have a AMD 2.5 Barton with 1.25 gig of single channel DDR ram and a Leadtek 7600 GS graphics. I have about £200 to spend and was thinking of simply upgrading to a Asrock mobo (so I can still use my DDR ram and AGP card) with Pentium duo core. But now my mate is upgrading his system and I can have some of his old components of him for about £60 I can get a AMD 3500+ 64 bit, 2 gig dual channel DDR. Then I buy myself this or a similar card for about £125: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu … =GX-018-BG
Ok the processor aint the best but for a bit less money I getting a better gfx card and will have 2g instead of 1g of ram (the Asrock mobo only has 2 ddr dimms), so my question is what would you do?

EDIT: The ram might be 1 set of corsair and another set Geil this will be ok right? They will be matched running in same channel just different matched pairs, if that makes sense.

is a mobo included with the CPU/mem? If it is and is still in a good condition I figure its a pretty good deal. A 3500+ is enough for pretty much all gaming needs, especially if you overclock it a bit. Even the 7600 is OK still. I would hold off any unnecessary upgrades (unless they are cheap like the stuff from your friend), save some money and then buy a up-to-date PC. I wouldn't buy old tech (pentium D with a DDR compatible mobo). In the end its wasted money.

The Pentium I was on about getting was a Duo core E6400 (hardly old tech) and the mobo is just backward comaptiable but a bit restricted.
Yeah for the £60 I getting processor, mobo and ram off my mate, so I think I gonna go for that tbh it will keep me going for a bit especially with quite a decent gfx card. Question is should I go for the one in my op or the ATI equivalent?

an E6400 is a Core2Duo (notice that it does not have duo core or Pentium in its name , be more specific or its hard to give any kind of decent advice). In that case you would have a good CPU and a mobo that will get the job done (its not great by any means, but it works well) and allow for good upgrades. But its obviously more expensive than getting your mates PC. I personally always try to buy new tech and stay clear of buying outdated stuff, but then again I don't have a restrained budget.

The only real deciding factor between getting an ATi or nVidia card is its price/performance factor. Both have good quality and equally shitty drivers. I'm not too familiar with prices in the UK, so I would head over to www.tomshardware.com and look at the benchmarks. Also remember that ati will release its R600 based cards in days. The 8600 cards should be out soon as well. If you can live with your 7600 until then I would wait with upgrading gfx.

Well I am to get my mates components of him I will have to upgrade my 7600 gfx as it is AGP and the mobo is PCI...

Which should I go for, and why, I have recently heard alot of good things about the ATI cards but have personally always been an Nvidia man. Finally will a 450w psu be enough to run it all?

the 2 cards have near identical processing power comparison here. the nvidia is overclocked so it will give you a bit more power in the benchmarks. the ati card can do AA & HDR at the same time, the nvidia can't (at least i think so). I personally would go with the Ati one, but only because I have had great experience with them. only had 1 nvidia card up to now (fx5200 ). look at the warranty and the included extras and make your choice on that.

Yeah I tried that comparison myself but wasn't sure which Nvidia one to compare as the one I looking has slightly different LOWER clock and memory speeds than GT's on the comparison tool 475/1360 compared to 520/1440 will this make much difference? I guess the difference is that it has 24 pixel pipes (same as the 7950) whereas the rest of the 7900's only have 20...

I think after a little research I should go for the ATI, it just a little hard though cus most of the benchmarking tools dont feature anything with specs like the BFG card so, unless anyone can help me out a little I gonna go for the ATI...
