When you say hurt, is it more like a constant (but cope-able) ache? I've had that before, only in my wrist. I've never flossed before and I'm only now starting to brush regulary.
Is it painful actually getting them in, or do they numb your mouth? I have never liked the orthodontist (even if she is hot ;P), although I see why I need them.
How long are they in for, on average? My teeth are "quite" crooked.
They don't have to numb your mouth at all.
What they do first is put four caps on your very back teeth. Those anchor the wire in place.
Then they take the little knobs (or brackets) and glue them on the front of your tooth. After that, they stick the wire in, and you are done.
Actually, the first time it shouldn't hurt really, the wire isn't very heavy-gauge.
For the hurt part, it is a long lasting ache, not a sharp pain or anything, quite dull actually. And it really hurts to clench your teeth too. It eventually dies down though.
When they change my wire, I don't even feel much pain, because I'm used to it. Also, I have a powerchain on, which is a long rubber strip that goes across your teeth to pull them in closer. Those kinda hurt, but again, you get used to it.
If I get them off i July, I will have had them on for 13 months. It all depends how bad your teeth are. It can range from a minimum of one year, to probably 4-5 years. It all depends.
