Anyone got/had them? I am getting mine soon. What should I expect?

The only concern at the minute I have is:

- Tightening of them every few weeks (how painful?)
- The stuff they use to get a mould kinda thing of your teeth shape. Both my brothers had this, and were wretching when they had it in their mouths.

Thoughts please. (Crooked teeth for me )

I'm getting mine off in July!

The first time you get them on is pretty bad. Your mouth hurts for about a week. It eventually calms down until the put a heavier wire on, and it hurts all over ago. Not saying this is make you scared, it's the truth.

After a few weeks though, the pain goes down, and you eventually forget they are in your mouth.

Just remember to brush lots, and try and floss. I don't floss lol, but I guess I should.
If you don't want black cavities in the shape of boxes on your teeth, then you should brush often.

That's all I can say right now. Ask questions

PS: Take advil or tylenol before going in to get them, and before each wire change.
Also, the mould of your teeth isn't bad. They just fill this thing with a paste, stick it in your mouth, feels and tastes weird, but eventually it dries and you're good to go.

When you say hurt, is it more like a constant (but cope-able) ache? I've had that before, only in my wrist. I've never flossed before and I'm only now starting to brush regulary.

Is it painful actually getting them in, or do they numb your mouth? I have never liked the orthodontist (even if she is hot ;P), although I see why I need them.

How long are they in for, on average? My teeth are "quite" crooked.

They don't have to numb your mouth at all.

What they do first is put four caps on your very back teeth. Those anchor the wire in place.
Then they take the little knobs (or brackets) and glue them on the front of your tooth. After that, they stick the wire in, and you are done.

Actually, the first time it shouldn't hurt really, the wire isn't very heavy-gauge.

For the hurt part, it is a long lasting ache, not a sharp pain or anything, quite dull actually. And it really hurts to clench your teeth too. It eventually dies down though.
When they change my wire, I don't even feel much pain, because I'm used to it. Also, I have a powerchain on, which is a long rubber strip that goes across your teeth to pull them in closer. Those kinda hurt, but again, you get used to it.

If I get them off i July, I will have had them on for 13 months. It all depends how bad your teeth are. It can range from a minimum of one year, to probably 4-5 years. It all depends.

I guess after 2-3 months you get used to them though. Thanks for the help, I know what to expect now heh.

I am off to the Orthodontist tomorrow, I don't know if it is just a check up or whatever though.

Had them for a few months, but subsequent accidents rendered them mostly pointless.

The only net result was pulling my front teeth back inwards. The alignment of my canines was negated by a series of accidents leading to the removal of a premolar and drilling/capping of both upper canines.
And I'm running low on molars, as well.

Braces suck, I got mine off a while ago.

I had them two times, first for a year and a half, then after because I didn't wear my retainer enough, so my Orthodontist told me I had to put them back on.  That was for another 8 months.  You should wear your retainer once you get them off, you don't want to get them back on again.

They only hurt for the first week, which is a bitch because you can't really eat.  When it tightens it also hurts, but you get used to it.

I have braces on right now. I'm supposed to get them off in summer. It hurts to chew (so eat softer foods) for a couple days when you first get them on, and for a day or two when they tighten it. The mold stuff is not that bad, I didn't even gag when it was in my mouth and I gag at like everything. I brush once or twice a day, and I eat/have eaten everything on the "Don't eat this" list. Doesn't make a difference.

So, after you get used to them (a couple weeks) they're not that bad. You just have to look in the mirror more often to make sure there isn't crap stuck in them.

Oh, and don't listen to people. They make it a big deal. Only little daisies actually get upset over braces.

I had them for about 3 years and what everybody is telling you is pretty much true.  When I got them I had the braces put on and then the wire was added about a week or two later.  Sometimes the braces that hold the wire will rub your cheeks or lips a little and cause some raw spots.  Nothing bad just irritating.  I had a number of busted lips from playing basketball and other sports and braces anly make it worse.  For the most part though the only time they hurt is for the couple of days after they tighten the wire.   Your teeth will be real sensitive for a day or two.  You just watch what you eat for a day or two and you will be fine.  Nothing to really worry about.

P.S.   If you have trouble keeping or getting your teeth clean after you get braces you can get a thing called a "Water Pick".   You fill a container full of water and it has a little wand like thing that sprays a fine jet of water out of it and it works really good for cleaning your teeth when you have braces.  Here is a link to one of the first I found on google http://www.dentist.net/waterpik.asp?sou … WAoduXSyHg

Lemme think...

Cracked my jaw, at least one tooth, and a couple of ribs in a rather nasty spill at the BMX track. Infection, mercury poisoning from filling.
Two teeth (plus the painfully sharp remains of one from the earlier one) and most of one cheek when elbowed off my bike into (and then down head-first) a brick wall. Infection a few years later lead to removal of one tooth entirely just so I could fucking SLEEP again.
Then being punched in the face a few times cracked two or three teeth on the other side.
And after that, just bad habits and chewing on pens. Although strangely enough, stripping wire with my teeth hasn't done anything bad.

Nothing to do with the braces or bad dentistry, just general idiocy on my part and other people being too willing to hurt me.

if you have to get a pallet expander your f*cked, it is this big ass metal thing kinda like braces and you have to stick a key in it and turn oh the pain. sorry I've had a shit load done to my teeth and my dumb ass never got a retainer. Make sure you get that after you get your braces done. It's not to necessary but it helps.

1.Go for the clear
2. there will be pain
3. retainer
4.nice straight teeth and they will be white because you have to go to the dentist a lot more to have a check up on those braces.

5. Good times.

1. Don't go for clear braces. I know you wub your starbucks, and coffee-colored braces aint pretty.

2. The pain's honestly not that bad. Down some ice cream to dull it.

3. Yes retainers = important as hell once you get the things off.

4. Yeah

Braces rock if your dontist doesnt suck, so suck it up, be a man, and live through them. Most everyone has them at some point. There are far more painful things than braces. Like being skinned alive then swimming in a pool of lemon juice. So remember: When you feel pain, know that you could be skinned alive in a pool of lemon juice.

I do 'wub' my Starbucks, I'm having one tomorrow!

Got my teeth "molding" done today. It wasn't that bad really. Guess I was worked up over nothing eh! I have to clean the front of my teeth a lot more, because apparently they aren't ready for braces but my side ones are. I've been told I have to get a few removed but I guess it'll all be worth it heh.

Going back in 4 weeks! Funnily enough, one of my friends was there today getting the exact same stuff done.
