I love the water.  I can't go more than a week without going in.  I try to go at least 3 times a week, but its hard when I have to be at wok early.  Especially when I stay out late drinking.

I couldn't imagine ever living more than 20 minutes from the beach.

Kinda like what they say to those scared of heights--don't look down. Try swimming backstroke, because then you'll always be looking at the sky.
precisely. water isn't a big deal for me, but i used to be uncomfortable with blue water. motorboating (as in the little tin rafts) around the deep part of tahoe was always a scary point for me, probably because the boat was so damn small.

I grew out of it though, when i went wake boarding on that blue water and the only thing i got was shrivel dick.

Of water, when i went on holiday to Lanzarote a couple of weeks back, i found myself and a couple of friends going on one of those pedalo things in the sea, we got quite far out and the water started to get darker..... some more of my friends had hired another pedalo and came up to us.....

They shouted to us and said..... " One of you swim over to here! "  anyway without a chance to say anything... my mates pushed me in... It was bloody freezing! anyway i swam over real fast and ever since i hate water.... on the way back to the beach, i couldnt look into the water, i was so freaked out for some reason.... all my friends thought i'd suddenly gone insane....

Is anyone else on thes Forums afraid of Water?
I am not scared of water when I know what is under me, but when you are far out in the ocean and you have the ignorance of not knowing what might be under your feet yes. I do agree that I also have a slight fear of deep ocean water. I just don't feel comfortable sticking my head in the water when it is dark and murky and when it is hundreds of feet deep. You aren't alone buddy.

I don't mind the beach or swimming pools. I've swam in a deep lake, but lakes are safer than open seas only because you can't just put a carnivorous fish in there all of a sudden. But I'm scared of deep open bodies of water. So it's kind of like a contradicting thing, I love swimming, not just in deep seas.

I love water.  I've been scuba diving for 13 years.

I was introduced to the pool at the ripe old age of "a few weeks" by my father.

I hate the water.  Unless there is some hot chicks in a hot tub.... a shower is all I do.

God, I'm the same way. Hate it. The entire time I'm in the water and can't see what's below me, my skin does that weird tingling like it's anticipating touch.

When I was 6 1/2, I nearly drowned in 3 feet of water.

That is why I began taking swimming lessons.

I absolutely love swimming, ocean, lake, pool, you name it.  Yet I still fall victim to this.  Just the last time I was waterskiing, I crashed, and while waiting for the boat to come get me, all I could think about was a fish whose mouth was as big as me just coming up and taking me forever, haha.  It also didn't help that it was right above where the Edmund Fitzgerald went down.  They never raised the ship or the victims who passed away when it went down.  Imagining Sea Ghosts FTL.

No, but I am have

Hedonophobia: is the fear of feeling pleasure. A person with this phobia has such a fear of feeling any form of pleasure that they stop doing anything they might enjoy.

Ithyphallophobia: is the fear of seeing, thinking about or having an erect penis. For men and women this phobia is debilitating. They must avoid anything sexual because of their extreme fear of an erect penis.

Eurotophobia: is the fear of female genitalia. For men suffering from this phobia they avoid sexual contact with women. For women this phobia is much more debilitating, as it is her own body parts that cause her trauma.

But seriously. I dont really love the water, but I dont hate it either. Its just a nice refreshing change to go swimming in a pool or a beach with friends.

QFE!

For me, I hate not seeing the bottom of the place I'm swiming in. Also, I hate 'the water' cause it totally fucked my hears up for a few days. (Yes, I shower... that won't do it. It's only when I put my head under the water). It's for that second reason that I'll snap anyone who dunks me - I don't really give a shit where I am (eg. a public place).

I am more of a sky person. I love flying... although that's a tad more expensive than going to the beach.

Same here. Went as a kid some 3 times under the surface in the eighties and had to be pulled up by my parents and that's spooking around. I guess it's something like if you can't see the bottom no one else will either, so if you go down, bye bye. With masks and stuff it's easier on the mind though Need to have a clear vision of the surrounding. So no problems with pools, or pooltables for that matter

It is the "Jaws" effect, and like Pasha5 said, you are not alone in the water.

I have a slight fear of deep water also because of this "Jaws" effect. I am always thinking that something "unusual" is going to appear and scare the shit out of me. I mean you could be swimming around in the ocean and all of a sudden some big bloody shark apears, or a dolphin.

When I was young I used to get scared in this way even in shallow water if there was some sea weed on the ocean floor, because when I looked down it was just black and then made it look deeper than it actually was.

Still not a big fan of the ocean these days, but mainly just because of the salty water issue.

I love the water. I only fear 2 things: j-10's and bears. Yes, bears. They're big, hairy and scary, and yes I do live in Australia. But one day i'm gonna go to canada and alaska and see some fucking bears and be like, holy shit bears, run.

Is this wierd?

Just some advice on bears, you never want to run from them because they will always out run you. Your only hope is to climb a tree but if there are no climable trees in the area then you should just play dead. If you can tell that the bear has the intent of killing you then you should fight it if you have a knife on you or something. They suggest carrying a bottle of pepper spray when you are in bear country. Pepper spray startles the bear and it has no idea what hit him and it will just run. If you encounter a bear at night, then it is a "rogue bear" which means it probably wants to kill you. If it is during the day, then you need to identify its behavior to see if its intent is to kill you. There are plenty of resources to help you with this topic when you go to canada.
P.S. The Grizzly Bear has a bad reputation of being the bear that are the most dangerous. Just because it is the biggest doesn't mean that it is going to kill more people than other bears. In fact, if you encounter a black bear you odds of living are less than when you encounter a grizzly bear. Black bears are just as capable killers as Grizzlies.

I love swimming, I've been swimming all my life. I'm just a wee bit freaked out about swimming in open water.
