I know this is old news, but with the ludicrousness of a Harry Potter Official Ministry of Magic Decree:

FROM THE MINISTER FOR POLICE & EMERGENCY SERVICES

DATE: Monday, March 8, 2004

SWORDS TO BECOME PROHIBITED WEAPONS

Swords will become prohibited weapons from July 1, carrying penalties of up to $12,000 or six months in prison for illegal use or possession, the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Andre Haermeyer said today.

Mr Haermeyer announced new sword regulations today, saying they would assist Victoria Police to crack down on incidents involving swords.

“The Bracks Government is implementing these new regulations to help Victoria Police overcome this culture of young people arming themselves with swords,” Mr Haermeyer said.

“From July 1, swords will be made prohibited weapons, making it illegal to use, possess or carry a sword.”

Can't think of any good reason why some one want or need a Sword, unless of course they were a Ninja.

Yeah. There've been way too many incidents of chopped heads and electrical damage.

well some sword can be quite cheap. 40 $ - 260 for a low end sword but still a weapon. Plus it looks cool thats my theory why there are alot of melee.

Only because they aren't allowed guns. What's next? Outlaw anything sharp? It might kill someone!

Don't laugh.  Roos (and wallabies) are scary sons of bitches.

In a more serious note: you can still have blunted swords for display, but there were occasional issues with clubbers getting upset and hunting down other patrons with swords, IIRC.

Keep in mind that this is relative.  To us, a few deaths in a similar fashion are a big deal (due to issues of scale, for one).

It might, but if it has a legitimate other purpose it won't happen.  What legitimate other purpose does a sword have?

This is a huge misconception about Australian laws - that guns are banned outright, hence the complaints about what hunters and whatnot will do. Well, you can get a gun if you have a good reason (although only certain types of guns - why the hell would you need an assault rifle?).

Swords? They look good.

lol at the Aussies weapon of choice

USA - Guns
UK - Knives
Australia - Swords!

That's awesome, if a bar fight kicked off and everyone pulled out a sword like the medieval times.

LOl yes, but remeber to give some room if your going to draw your sword; you might slash one of your buddies by accident. I am left handed and I can recall many when its annoying when my left elbow clashes with a right hander while sitting and writing. image that but with a sword.

Hahahah I actually ROFL'd at that. I know imagine Australia as this medieval place where everybody walks around with a sword on their hips.
