We seem to be on a delayed loop here in Europe when it comes to political speeches, so I just now caught King George's speech about the VATech massacre.  The very first thing I noticed was pretty inane as I caught it somewhere in the middle.  He totally butchered the Romanian name of the professor [Liviu Librescu...LIV-YOO LEEB-RESS-COO, the "r" is rolled but that can be forgiven] that saved his class of students.  The President's staff completely dropped the ball on that, knowing full well his grasp of the English language was tenuous at best, and therefore his Romanian, by extension, would be not less than blasphemous when spoken.  Somebody should have at least ran it by him and said it out loud before handing him the cue cards.  But I digress.

The real kicker though came when they replayed the Whitehouse press conference a half hour later.  The administrations first response wasn't words of condolences, or conveying sympathy, or even commonality in the tragedy.  Nothing of the sort.  Perino made it very clear what the talking points would be:

Chimpy McFlightsuit's Spokesman wrote:

The president believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed.
WTF?!?!  This is their FIRST FREAKING RESPONSE?!?  Pandering to their right-wing base on gun rights?  Look, I'm all for gun rights as your average Constitution-loving progressive liberal, its NOT THE FREAKING ISSUE.  Big tragedy, America needs leadership, show some!  For fuck's sake, it isn't that hard...you don't even need to mean it.  Just come out and say "The President and his staff, first of all, would like to express their deepest condolences to the people effected by this tragedy."  Would that have been so freaking hard?

Instead, they reacted to the tragedy like "Oh shit, someone's gonna talk about gun control now...we can't look weak for our far-right base, lets cut off those libruls before they get started...then we can say something like 'oh we're soooo sorry', blah blah blah."  Gimme a break Mr. Prez.

Be fair, their first response to 9/11 was "let's go shoot some people", what do you expect?

A first response that directly goes to the justification of current firearms legislation can easily be interpreted as a defensive action. Seems that the current leadership of the US is unsure about weapons-laws themselves.

But there was no immediate offensive statement against firearms legislation at that time. An act of violence with an extremely tragic outcome needs not a response about opinions regarding the current laws, but a condolence-speech. It's like a little kid crying "I didn't do it" or " It was like that when I got here", when a comprehensive "tragedy-speech" would have been more in place.

The response was IMHO tactless, dumb and definitely not throrughly considered.

Yeah and Hannity was all on Rosie O'Donnell's ass for "politicizing this tragedy." This was right after he was trying to link it to al-Qaeda and radical Islam to try and drum up support for the Iraq debacle.

I'm glad I started watching Fox News. You get to see all sorts of silly things.

Things like that don't increase support - they make people laugh at you. And when people start laughing at you...

When I heard his speech I thought the same DonFck, who defends something when no one has critised it yet unless you KNOW it's the problem and will face questions about it later?  He would have been better off saying,

"Our lax gun laws facilitated this, but we can not ban guns"  because that what he was really saying.

Umm no, we mourned, looked at our security risk, and changed our policies. Then with the support of most the world we went into Afghanistan who were openly supporting terrorism.

Only a real asshole would watch a speech about something like that and turn it into a pile of shit dressed up as words on a forum.

What exactly are you saying? Politicians shouldn't be held accountable for the things they or their subordinates say?

It's unfortunate that anybody has to politicize a tragedy, but that's the world we live in. Liberals will use this incident as a call for stricter gun control, and conservatives will use try and refute that. Bush just took the first swing at it. He's a politician, you know? It's his job to take care of his base, much like the dems will do when they get around to calling for stricter gun control over this issue (and rosie doesn't count, she's just fucking insane)

#2: You still haven't explained what you did mean. How did he "turn it into a pile of shit?"

Pointing out he mispronounced a name during a speech about this incident is fucking retarded and pointless.  Hence the pile of shit.

That was a bit of a snark on my part, a little fake outrage.  Of course the retard can't pronounce anything longer than 2 syllables, we already knew that.  The real point came in the next paragraph, where he really failed to show...ummm...whats the word...humanity.

You know, that feeling you get sometimes when you see someone and think "Gee, it would suck to be them."  Well, humanity is that next feeling you get when you actually get a little tingly feeling like its a bad thing because you really think so.  Humanity, empathy, sympathy, whatever you want to call it.  Its not the same as throwing up your hands and saying "gosh, I'm glad nobody can blame me for how much that persons life sucks."

Now, keep in mind this is the spokesperson for his WHOLE ADMINISTRATION.  It's not just a personal problem on his part, the rot goes a bit deeper.  Definitely through the top leadership of the party, maybe further to the middle leadership, maybe even all the way to the true believers...
