Just read this on the BBC website ... Just thought I would get your views

Mine...well one of my neighbours has an unsecured connection...I have told him about it on several occasions.. the last time I told him he said he was not bothered.. so my son uses his connection for MSN whilst I play 2142...

So no I dont think it should be illegal...its their own fault for not using security measures

seriously thats like saying it should be legal to rob me if i pull out my wallet to buy food. because after all, its my own fault for taking it out of the safety that is my back pocket.

Not really, but is the same as saying "should it be illegal to leave your car doors wide open when your not using it", althought the same answer of No is given.

Secured or not, it's not your connection.

It's your own fault if you don't secure it, really. I think, however, that there perhaps should be a disclaimer about it, so that people can't sue the companies in the USA.

Sounds like a good Idea..... a disclaimer should be on the router stating that you do not have a legal leg to stand on if you dont secure your connection...

Unless you are offering WiFi to all, then it's wrong for someone to use it without permission. Your yard is, generally speaking, available to all (at least your front yard)...does that mean trespassing should be legal?

Now, if you have open WiFi because you are ignorant, you need to wise up a bit...

I don't think any government should/can police wifi.

Technically I feel its wrong, even though I have done it many times; mostly to learn about my neighbors.

In ur case you have told your neighbor, so I'm sure he knows. I know people who know it is and don't care. Actually other than MAC filtering mine is not either

Illegal or not, if they're too fucking thick to set up security (which on the average wireless access point takes about 15 seconds) they're probabaly too thick to know someone else is using their connection, so it's unlikly any great number of people will be caught.

don't make laws that are unenforceable; it just encourages people to break other laws.  i think the real question here is, "is it 'the right thing to do'".

no...pretty soon there will be disclaimers for everything.  "warning: use of detour might cause mental anguish", for example.

what ever happened to common sense?  when i fell off my bike i learned to wear long sleeves/padding of sorts, i did not look for some one to blame.  <- major failure in today's youth.

in the legal definition (for Switzerland) stealing is consciously taking something (i.e. anything with a physical body) away from a person without a legal reason (it's yours, you are borrowing it, ...). Internet doesn't have any mass, thus its O.K. by our laws.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

People are stupid for not securing their connection. But at the end of the day its a form of theft.

Controlling access via MAC address filtering is the most secure you can be without a full .11i implementation which definitely does NOT take 15 minutes to configure...lol

.11i>MAC addy filtering>WAP>WEP

It takes a relatively sophisticated setup to steal a wireless MAC addy, but windoze makes it easy to hijack a MAC addy once it's known...

Seems they (UK Police) have even made up a charge for it..

"The man arrested at the weekend was cautioned for dishonestly obtaining electronic communications services with intent to avoid payment"

Mine is secured by MAC filtering/WEP/and the Network is none discoverable..  and so far works for me!

You just said the keyword "intent". But seriously, it takes me 30 seconds to secure a connection. Why people don't do it is beyond me.

Could just as easily apply to phreaking. I doubt it was specifically made up to deal with Wi-Fi.

I've used the wifi in my apt building a few times and I have no problem with it. I secured the one at my old house so that nobody could use it, because I was smart enough to do so. If they don't secure their own network, it's their fault. If they don't know how to secure it, they shouldn't have wifi, or get their isp to do it for them. Simple as that.

People going to jail over it is retarded.

I've seen people with a wireless mouse, wireless keyboard and WiFi all sitting right next to their desktop PC beaming their WiFi across an unspanable 12cm distance. Idiots.

Incidentally, change the ID on your wireless router to something along the lines of PASSWORD-DETECTOR to scare your neighbours.

If i knew how to do it i'd be doing it right now.

Until then, pay i shall.

Infact i bet nobody near me has wireless, how long is the "steal radius"?

Regardless of the legality, using an unsecured wireless connection (especially one where you have no idea what monitoring tools are installed at the homebase), could be a security risk for you.  Your neighbor or any one close by with the proper monitoring tools can capture all your wireless data and extract sensitive information like your MSN and 2142 login info.

That free wireless connection simply indentified as Linksys could very well be a hacker just waiting for you to use his wireless connection bait.  And if your PC is setup to share on the network and your workgroup name is Workgroup, you will be in a world of hurt.

Last time I went to visit family in London (almost a year ago), I could pick up ~30 wireless networks, with a laptop. at least half of them were insecured so it was intrawebs-ahoy.
