what does one do with an iso file to get it working?
Use a CD burning application to burn the "ISO image" to blank media. I assume you're not burning a game that you just grabbed offline...
An .iso file is sort of something like data that is stored on a normal DVD. So you can either burn it on a DVD as it is , or host it on your computer with DAEMON Tools or something similar.
If you have Nero install you can just right click the ISO and use the Nero option, normally you should burn at 8x speed though.
An .iso is a CD / DVD image file (basically all of the contents of a CD / DVD put into one file).
.iso files are used as they are bootable (e.g. you stick in a random music cd into your computer it wont boot from it, but putting in a windows CD will boot becuase it has an .iso file burned to it(.
What .iso file do you have / want to do with it?
There are LOADS of programmes out there to deal with .iso in different ways (virtual drives / create .iso / explore .iso etc)

get a program called UltraISO or DAEMON Tools
UltraISO is for burning it to disk
DEAMON is fro hosting it on your pc
basically its just the image of a disk
i use a bf2 image for playing the game to preserve my disk
although i have a .mds and .mdf file instead of an ISO coz there smaller.
