Ever since someone posted the link to www.conservapedia.com, I have been administrating the site. However, i cannot believe what they posted today on the main page.

Read for yourself the official response by Virginia Tech's English Department. No mention of God or prayer, but many invocations of unrelated liberal causes:

...
We are Virginia Tech
We do not understand this tragedy
We know we did nothing to deserve it [denies accountability]

But neither does a child in Africa
Dying of AIDS
Neither do the Invisible Children
Walking the night away to avoid being captured by a rogue army [globalism]

Neither does the baby elephant watching his community
Be devastated for ivory [environmentalism]
Neither does the Mexican child looking
For fresh water

Neither does the Iraqi teenager dodging bombs [anti-Bush]
Neither does the Appalachian infant killed
By a boulder
Dislodged
Because the land was destabilized [environmentalism]
and here is the link to the talk page about it.

Oh, I just have fun getting into arguments with people, but IMHO, this just shows no respect for the dead. People I know have lost friends through all this.

The language got off easy. Had it been me, it'd have been raped twice more once dead.

Whilst it's kinda black hearted (well, not really...but to the Victims family it is) - it's the truth. If you can't accept the truth, well that's your problem.

You wana puke?  Yeah the truth is a little upsetting isn't it.

32 people died, and that's a massacre here in America.

Too bad no one cares about the thousands who are dying of aids in Africa.  No one cares about the killings in Darfur which have claimed the lives of 100,000+ people.

32 people get killed in America and the media rapes the story for a week.

100,000+ people get killed in Africa and you hear about it in a blurb in between the "important stuff" on the news.

If you can't see something wrong here, you're probably too ignorant for your own good.

With my own thinking?  I suppose thinking that all lives are equal is a bit preposterous in this day and age.

I was just pointing out a major flaw in American media/society.

I don't think I was stepping out of line or "too ignorant" when I said that the media had a fucking hay day with this VT story to the point where I actually stopped watching the news for a couple days because it was all Matt  Lauer and his cronies sitting in the middle of the campus talking about what a huge tragedy it was.  And there's no question.. it was an absolutely horrible thing and I really feel for the friends and parents of those 32 killed; but ffs it kinda gets your blood pumping when you realize that hundreds of thousands of people are dying and getting much less coverage than 32.

And just for the point of perspective take a look at this.

Nevermind, it's not going to work...

But 100,000 | things took up 23+ pages on a word document, so you should get the picture..

I think ATG just proved your point. Poor guy is so egocentric he takes every post as an insult to himself or his beloved redwhite&blue and can't see anything else.

just to give some context - here's the full text from the Virginia Tech Department of English website:

Virginia Tech Department of English wrote:

We are Virginia Tech

We are sad today
We will be sad for quite a while
We are not moving on
We are embracing our mourning

We are Virginia Tech

We are strong enough to stand tall tearlessly
We are brave enough to bend to cry
And we are sad enough to know that we must laugh again

We are Virginia Tech

We do not understand this tragedy
We know we did nothing to deserve it

But neither does a child in Africa
Dying of AIDS

Neither do the Invisible Children
Walking the night away to avoid being captured by a rogue army

Neither does the baby elephant watching his community
Be devastated for ivory
Neither does the Mexican child looking
For fresh water

Neither does the Iraqi teenager dodging bombs

Neither does the Appalachian infant killed
By a boulder
Dislodged
Because the land was destabilized

No one deserves a tragedy

We are Virginia Tech
The Hokie Nation embraces
Our own
And reaches out
With open heart and mind
To those who offer their hearts and hands

We are strong
And brave
And innocent
And unafraid

We are better than we think
And not yet quite what we want to be

We are alive to imagination
And open to possibility
We will continue
To invent the future

Through our blood and tears
Through all this sadness

We are the Hokies

We will prevail
We will prevail
We will prevail

We are
Virginia Tech

Nikki Giovanni, delivered at the Convocation, April 17, 2007

In the English Department at Virginia Tech, we deeply mourn our students and colleagues who have lost their lives, and we grieve with the families and friends who have experienced such devastating loss. We extend our arms in love to these people and to our students who survive.

To be honest, I don't really care about any of the issues pointed out on this page so far, as long as nobody's starving or shooting me and my friends/family I don't worry about it.

They are roughly-related, in that shit happens. But the Iraqi dodging bit isn't necessarily anti-Bush.

One thing I do find bizarre is the conflict of desire in some liberals I talk to, who 1) wish more wealth to the third world and 2) get pissed off whenever anyone tries to develop the third world because it knocks over a couple of trees and causes a few mudslides.

Allow me to put it into more context for you all.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=snuc1hDDSiI
That part at the end, in the last 15 seconds of the video?  That's what it was all about!  It doesn't matter what she said, it matters how she said it.  We were all so wound up after Monday, after hearing all those that came before her talk.  When she spoke, it gave us the chance to finally let loose our emotions, our sadness.  It gave us a chance to acknowledge what had happened, it gave us a chance to respond to the attack in the best way we know how.  It was so relieving to burst into our chant, because it was the first time that any of us really realized that it would be ok.  That's what matters with those words.  None of us got what she said, but all of us got what she meant.  So if you want to puke, feel free, but try to understand for a moment the objective of the poem and how she succeeded in accomplishing that objective.

Hmm.... I think you're talking about a group, because individuals can't believe both at the same time (can they?)
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.

Individuals can believe in whatever they want, regardless of logic. As to the particular conundrum I mentioned, I contrast in that I 1) wish more wealth to the third world and 2) wish them more power over their own land insofar that it does not bring harm to my own countrymen.

...No one seems to get this. I'll tell you what, when you comfort a crying friend who just lost a loved one, only to find some bastard take something meant to inspire and twist it for fucking politcal purposes, then I'll let you lecture me on "ignorance." People take so much time bleeding your hearts over something you don't have the power to stop, yet completely ignore the pain you can heal.
