After several delays, AMD plans to launch its long-awaited R600 graphics processors. AMD is currently briefing select members of the press on its R600 architecture in the Tunisia, but there is no embargo date on the R600 for DailyTech -- we can show you benchmarks now.

AMD plans to launch a completely new DirectX 10 lineup with the flagship ATI Radeon HD 2900 XTX. Other models such as the Radeon HD 2900 XT, Radeon HD 2600-series and Radeon HD 2400-series will also join AMD’s DirectX 10 family after the initial high-end launches.

AMD equips the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT with 320 stream processors to take on NVIDIA’s GeForce 8800 GTS, which features 96 stream processors. However, AMD and NVIDIA have taken different approaches towards their unified shader designs. AMD pairs the R600 GPU with 512MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1.65 GHz across an eight-channel, 512-bit memory interface. In comparison, the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS features 640MB of 1.6 GHz GDDR3 memory on a 320-bit memory interface.

AMD equips the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT with a dual-slot, blower-type heat sink. Unlike the OEM Radeon HD 2900-series previously pictured, which is an 11.5” long card, the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT makes use of a smaller cooler so everything fits within the 9.5” PCB. Although the R600 GPU supports HDMI audio and video output, the reference design only features dual dual-link DVI.

Onto the benchmarks. The tests were conducted on an Intel D975XBX2 BadAxe2, Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 and 2x1GB DDR2-800 MHz. The operating system on the test system was Windows XP, with a fresh install before benchmarking each card. Testing of the AMD ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT was performed using the 8.361 Catalyst RC4 drivers, while the GeForce 8800 GTS used ForceWare 158.19 drivers.
There you have the specs released by the people of Daily Tech.

Now, after all it's not that much for more than 6 months of delay, is it?

Anyone know if there'll be an AGP version or is it PCIE only?

I'll bet money that it's PCI-E only.

Yes, I think that such power can only be possible with PCIE or maybe they will release a downgraded version of it. Only time will tell.

They will probably release some sort of AGP varient, AMD said not so long ago there not abandoning AGP quite yet, and its to much of a market still to turn ur back on .

I just want a DX10 AGP card. I don't want to have to buy a whole new PC just yet...

Exactly, and there are quite a few people in that situation, I am not so sure about them releasing a 2900 in AGP format (then again there is an 1950 agp sooooo its possible), but probably the 2600 and lower I would suspect.....

It's possible for them to do it, it's just a matter of whether some one will actually manufacture it.  They said that they made sure that the chip would be compatible with their Rialto bridge chip.

Yes. Some of us don't have buckets of money to throw at a whole new computer. With maybe another gig of ram, my PC would maybe just about handle vista and an AGP dx10 card would mean it would maybe just about handle the first wave of dx10 games.

PS: DT doesn't know anything about ATI's new gfx cards
(according to someone who already can call the top end card his own, as he got one on the AMD TechDay).

This is dailytech's HD 2900XTX with 1gb memory so ya better stop saying that. if you don't even believe ur own eyes I  can't help you. THAT IS THE DX10 RADEON CARD what u are saying they don't have or are not allowed to show it off. but they did.

edit: btw that is the OEM card which is bigger than the retail one they are going to sell for normal ppl

Wherefrom do you know that this is the final version?

Edit: Hm, it's strange. In any case, this whole story of breaking the NDA wouldn't be worth the effort - but possibly DT got paid by nVidia to release such crappy benchmarks

actually that is the oem version which is mostly the same as the retail model (exept they have different sized PCBs) AMD/ATI said in the cebit that they start sending the test samples (mostly OEM cards) to big test sites. That card arrived to dailytech a day ago and ATI has already said that the cards they are sending are the launch models so no more revisions coming (isn't 3 revisions already enough? )

There may be a much slower version for AGP. AGP simply doesn't have the bandwidth for high end modern cards so don't expect anything even approaching the performance of the 2900XT. The 7900GS absolutely saturates the bandwidth on the AGP, so you can't really get any more speed than that. There is no real reason not to have DX10 on an AGP card though.

What GPU do you have now?
