Today is a great day for me, and may be a great day for some of you also.  The airline I work for, Skybus Airlines, went public today earlier this morning.  From mid morning to mid afternoon, we made about 1.5 million in ticket sales.

The way it works is simple, all flights start out with 10 seats at 10 dollars, then increase in price as they fill up.  For example, you may look at the calender and see 60 dollars on one day, yet 10 dollars the next day.

This is just our initial cities, as our fleet grows other cities in the US, Canada, and Caribbean will be added.  All flights are direct (non-stop).  Other "hubs" will be added in the future to provide non-stop service to other cities.  I realize this only helps people in central Ohio, or people from these initial cities who need to come to central Ohio, but expansion will be done carefully.

As an example, I just booked a flight to Burbank (LA) round trip for $40.80.  The taxes were actually 80 cents more than the tickets.

Wow dude that is kickass.  How do you stay in business?

EDIT:  I understand the way the money part works, but isn't that a bit cheap to keep an airline company running?

One example, but one of the main ones is smaller airports.  Instead of LAX (Los Angeles), we will fly into Burbank.  Not too far from downtown and much easier to get in and out of  Less time on the ground means more time in the air which equals money.

Just Kansas City right now.  If I told you more I would be in trouble.

A little Ryan and Southwest for the most part.  Since most of the "higher up" helped start and run both of those airlines.

would be great if I wanted to fly to Columbus, Ohio.  So I guess that's where you guys are based, eh?  Let me know when there are more flights out of Burbank.  I'll fly almost anywhere for ~$50.

PS- Burbank Airport is waaay better than LAX.  You can arrive 1/2 hour before departure and still have a beer in the bar.

We are based in Columbus.  And you are correct about Burbank.  It all comes down to the best deal you can find.  If you want to go to the Boston area, you could technically do it for about 85 dollars round trip.  You would have to stop in Columbus, and re-check your bags though.  It all comes down to what you want to pay for.

I will be out there May 26th, but I have to go to downtown LA then back to Columbus.  Next time I go, we can have a few beers.

Sounds like a good day for the commercial airline industry, or at least for you and not your competition.

Well that is one thing we did also.  We did not go head to head with anyone.  None of our non-stop routes compete with anyone as of yet.

Mmmmm, monopoly

Do you foresee any companies popping up in the future directly competing with you, or bigger companies trying to imitate your model anytime soon?

Eventually we will have to step on some toes.  But, it seems the larger airlines are more interested in crushing Virgin America right now.
