Have you played around with ready boost? I got a new flash drive for work and I'm going to give it a try Monday. I have four gigs now but I just want to see if it will impact my performance.

Vista can suck on my balls. Vista only runs faster because it consumes your ram with pre-loaded shit so everything you click on appears faster. In reality do you whiners really care if a program is loaded up 10 seconds faster than XP? I don't. The main problem with Vista is that it takes control of everything. If anyone has a high-end sound card then you can expect Vista to make it worthless. X-Fi cards are reduced to nothing more than the onboard sound you get on your motherboard. All the cool features like EAX, etc. are disabled because Vista runs the sounds through its own filters before it ever hits the real device driver. I won't be upgrading to Vista until it's absolutely necessary. And for those of you who simply love the look of Vista, you can find and download desktop themes for XP that completely change the look to match Vista.

Surely that's a lot slower than regular RAM though?

It doesn't function the same way, but will in fact boost quite a bit. It acts as a temporary storage for dll files (and probably more).

Ok ...well where to start...how about...Ive had vista dual booted now for about 2 months......BF2142 upgd 1.25 came out ...so I thought why not take the plunge...I booted into Vista installed BF2142 ..then Northern Srike then 1.25....no problems what so ever with the install

Click on start 2142 boots quick looking good...go to options ..set all to high.......8800GTX ... sorted needs to restart....ok...... optimising shaders usually takes 3 - 4 mins......done in just under 2.....game looks awesome....no lag......bring it on...just finished a 2 hour looky nice test ...fast smooth .. very enjoyable...

AMD 64 X2 4400 2 gig of mem 2x320 seagates in raid 0

StokoE = if vista sucks arse on your system...then there is something wrong with your system(maybe I can help)...it runs fine on mine....I get a score of 5.0 on the vista compatability screen

Everything just seems smoother

Only probs i had initally were the creative drivers....fixed now and the Nvidia drivers...also fixed now....

Give it a few more weeks..and I will switch to vista completly

As for Vista tagging your bios.....wrong...just set virus protection in your bios and nothing can be written to it....

If you forgot to do that just reflash..

I have lots of shall we say not completly legal stuff on my PC ......window genuine advantage is on my PC and guess what so is all my dubios content...I also have over 15,000 mp3 tracks...none with drm...lets look ...oh yeah still there....
Can I get rid of DRM and that monitoring shit?
If I want to switch....I seriously need to do that.
This may be of interest to you, although it sounds like it's not finished/available to the public yet

I'll just wait till I get a new computer. I shouldn't worry... this one is beginning to die.

With adequate RAM, CPU, Graphics and hard drive, how would vista stack up for someone using CS3/lightroom for photography?

Vista Pre loads Regularly used files into unused ram so if you play lots of games load times do get faster..

Kmarion

readyboots works well ...very well indeed, in normal usage Vista will swap your pagefile to a readyboost able usb drive so works faster...also has the ability to make laptop batteries last longer as the HD can power down and the Readyboost takes over.

Get lots of RAM and there's no reason as to why it would be any different to XP really.

No need. 1.5GB should be fine. 1GB should be fine....
Once you are using PS then it doesnt take up a lot of ram. And with the pre-load, you should be fine.

McMinty, that is why I am switching. So I can just use Adobe CS3 and other stuff like that.
