We were all at this restaurant just outside our gated community, and its nice and sunny day. Then, while we eat, we see all these flashes of light... lightning? but no following thunder, nor any clouds nor rain. Not for long, though. Power over the whole area gets cut (around 5-6 square miles) and considering it's 40 degree weather with 90% relative humidity, it is not the most comfortable way to be.

Then the worst part comes: the wind.

It knocks loose the tent-awning over the bikes and scooters, and knocks them all over... into the flooding waters. So, we all run out to try and save them, but every single engine has flooded. Screwed. It's hot water rain, and more lightning goes off here and there. I swear if I didn't know any better I'd have thought it was a typhoon, and it'd be impossible to get home. And we'd be stuck for days.

So there we were, six of us all huddled on a restaurant wall under cover (which didn't really help - strong winds make rain get everywhere) all sweaty and hot for almost 3 hours, before the power gets back, we dry off and cool down inside before walking home.

I've been in major hurricanes and typhoons before, but i always knew they were coming. When it happens like this... jesus.

My friend's dad is from Thailand.. apparently, their family owns this big peanut company and makes more money than god. Their last name is Pongvachararak. Took me a while to learn that one.

The owner of my company set my wife and I to Florida so I could setup the network at his condo.  My wife was 6 months Pregnant at the time and they figured it would be nice to give us 4 days away from our 2 year old so we could relax a bit.  He flew down and found out that Hurricane Charlie was on the way in.  We were forced to evacuate 2 hotels, one on the beach right before the storm rolled in and one after the storm when they couldn't get electric restored and our room was full of water.  We went through 3 hotels in 4 days and ended up only being about 15 miles from the eye of the storm as it roled through.

Side note, The only place that had power and was serving food was a little hole in the wall Chinese Take out joint down the street.  We waited in line for close to 3 hours for what, at the time, was the greatest take out ever.  The little bastards had that shop open during the entire storm and people were flocking there to get the first meal of the day at about 10 pm.  The damn hotel didn't have any food.  Just a bar.

Wow, it happened again tonight, for only 2 hours but we were drunk so more than prepared. It doesn't seem that bad anymore. I'm only worried that it's to be expected tomorrow and the day after etc.

And yes, it's Bangkok.

Right after the week of water-warfare in this country, mother nature dishes out its turn.

The raining has subsided but there's still the thunderless lightning goin on.

Perhaps this can shed some light on the situation

Time wrote:

In 1885 a heavy bolt of lightning hit the Washington Monument. But nobody in the neighborhood heard any clap of thunder. The occurrence was recorded by the National Bureau of Standards as a bolt of thunderless lightning.

Of this unfamiliar phenomenon electrical engineers took little note until three years ago when Karl Boyer McEachron, General Electric Co.'s ace lightning researcher, started a study of bolts which strike Manhattan's 1,230-foot Empire State Building, a giant lightning rod. During his study Mr. McEachron observed that several strokes which hit the skyscraper made no noise. Last week he had an explanation:

"Thunder is the result of a pressure wave caused by the sudden expansion of air created by a quick lightning discharge. All flashes do not release energy with the same speed. ... In some cases the electrical current is built up and released slowly; that is, in one or two tenths of a second as compared to millionths of a second in other discharges. This so-called slow lightning produces no thunder."

* Summer "heat lightning" appears to be noise less, but it is simply the reflection along the horizon of lightning so far away that its thunder is usually not heard.
They called them Silent Bolts

I like peanuts.  Thai food has a lot of peanuts on it, so I can see why they make bank.  My favorite Thai food, Phad Thai, has peanuts on it and even peanut sauce!  Hows that for nutty!

reminds me of being backpacking (i.e. no restaurant in a hundred miles) and getting caught in nickel and quarter sized hail. We ended up unpacking and putting our aluminum pots on our heads. Im alive, but my ears ring every now and then...
