ADSL2+ high pings,ADVICE PLEASE,modem settings etc.

Hia all,ive just got my adsl2 up and running (in melbourne,australia) and the ISP is located in Adelaide (another state).I have had many isp,s and never got above 30-40 ping to my local servers (usually 10-15..) and that was with melbourne based isp,s 1500/256 connections.
So now i have adsl2 and i am very dissapointed to say the least,i never get below 100ms ping now to ANY server,even my isp,s game server,my web pages take longer to open and my download rates from most local servers are erratic and usually below what i used to get on the old slower plans.
Is this purely that i have chosen an isp that is geographicly 700klms away or is there any kind of modem settings i can change.I simply cannot play with 100 ping after being used to 15-20...(
ANY HELP APPRECIATED!

PS:I have a DLINK 502T and a DLINK 504T,in case any1 else has these might help?

I'm interested to see if it recommends the Adelaide sever or the Melbourne one.

I get different results,nowhere near the advertised but thats to be expected with adsl2 being what it is.While most of my speed tests to my isp are great,anywhere else their shite,and the gaming ping is what gets me...GRRRR,then the less than 1500/256 download speeds...sigh.

Okay by the look of it, Koala doesn't have a authentication server (I wanna say POP?) in Melbourne, meaning that to go anywhere you have to go up to Adelaide to connect to the interwebs then double-back. Likewise, my mates with Exetel (Sydney based) have to go up to Sydney and back.

I myself am with Internode (another Adelaide based ISP), yet Speedtest recommends I use the Melbourne based server as that's the closest point to me (meaning I connect to the webz through Melb)...

Koala's network might be a little congested too, what times are you looking at these at?

Also, Speedtest has a "Forum link (for most forums)" right there, just dump that in and it goes.

You could try some traceroutes to servers, see how many hops there are. 30's not too bad still, no 15 sure, but its better than the guys with 70s...

Just out of curiosity, what ISP are you with?

I just recently signed up for ADSL2 with Internode, and I only get roughly 7mb/s sync speed.

Im with KOALA TELECOM and best speed test i get from them is around the 5-6 mb/s,which is fine,but i just spoke to them about the 100+ pings i get and they did indeed say they had a prolem atm,so maybe it will get better.They gave me a proxy to use to improve my erratic downloads and thats helped so heres to looking up.)

That's not too good. I have ADSL2+ with iiNet, and live just outsude the 'very good speed range' from the ADSL exchange.

And this is when I sync at full speed (1536). I can't even load speedtest when it gets the ol' 300. Thankyou Telstra, that service box/stormwater drain is doing a wonderful job. Maybe one day you'll replace another metre of the 4198 remaining to be fixed. One doughnut at a time, eh?
