Consciousness & self awareness might not be possible - period - in computer circuits (no matter how many transistors are involved). Also, exponential growth based upon Moore's Law will not continue indefinitely. So unless it is (near) exactly like a brain cells and/or until we know how consciousness is either generated by process or simply tapped into as a component of physical reality - it is all pure conjecture.

Robot rights? Time to post something about the robot's rights (from Asimov's I,Robot):

First Law:
A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

Second Law:
A robot must obey orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

Third Law:
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

And his personnal contribution:

Zeroth Law:
A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm

besides, a robot would hire a robot lawyer and get around them

Here is a wiki about the three robotic laws. Robots rights.

I just love how it makes reference to a series of books of Asimov, the foundation. I recommend it a lot to you guys (although it's composed of 7 books).

I don think is feasable to think that you could program a robot to do this.
