I have my own theories, but I was wondering what you all might have to say.

What the U.S. did in Afghanistan and Iraq was relatively similar, why were the results so different?

It wasn't that similar.

In any case a lot of the problems in Iraq stem from all the different factions there that hate each other. There's not so much of a problem with that in Afghanistan - where there is a massive (~90%) Shia majority.

Because Iraq is a mixture of different ethnic and religious groups: Sunni Kurds, Sunni Arabs and Shia Arabs.  When Saddam was removed, they all wanted a share of Iraq.  That, GWB didn't see coming.

Iraq is almost 80% Shia.  Sunnis and Shias have lived together for hundreds and hundreds of years, and without conflict for most of it.

No it isn't. It's a 60/40 split. Then you add the Kurdish and Arabic differences and all hell breaks loose.

Shia is about 60%, and Sunni Kurd and Arab are about 20% each.

My bad.

So that is it?

Sunnis and Shias have lived almost exclusively in harmony for hundreds and hundreds of years.

Except for all the times they've been killing each other.

And the Kurds - well, lets not get into that....

They have lived in peace far longer than they have lived in bloodshed.

In fact, as we speak, in many areas in the Middle East, Sunnis and Shias live in the same neighborhoods, and go to parties together, and even marry each other.

Northern Alliance....

We had the right organization of local support and Islamic support in Afghanistan.  The world supported our intervention in Afghanistan, and we got the job done.

Iraq was against the world's will, and we had virtually no Arab support in the aftermath.

Now, Afghanistan is falling apart because we're wasting time, lives, and money on Iraq.
