hey guys

was wondering if anyone knew of any ways i could password protect either my entire flash drive, or particular folders within it?

i have tried www.truecrypt.org  , but it involves re-mounting the drive using the truecrypt software, and i need to use it at school where they wont have the software.

cheers,
mitch

you can run truecrypt from & save to a flash drive
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

let me dig up a guide

EDIT: meh, can't find one so I will try to explain. Download true crypt. Put the folder "setup files" onto the flash drive. create a volume on the drive. When you are at school, plug in the drive, open the "setup files" folder and run truecrypt.exe and mount. when you are done: unmount.

ok max +1 for help so far. not wanting to sound arrogant but is there no easier way? ie. plug in drive, windows box opens, enter password, and it's accessible as normal?

there is a way to auto run the app. Don't remember how though. Its somewhere in the documentation. I have auto run disabled anyhow, so I never bothered to remember how to do that

it's just the school network is very "limited" as to what you can do ... and if i can't access youtube i doubt i can run .exe's that's all.

you won't be able to use any type of encryption software without the possibility to run some sort of .exe. On a better note I figured out how to auto-run it. Open the program --> tools --> traveler disk set up...

From the link Polux posted above. ^^^

Make a zip folder, then you put your file in the zip, you make right clik anywhere in the zip folder (on the background) and you press Add a Password, you enter your password and then each time someone want to open the fille it will ask for the pass.
If that is confusing just put what you want in the zip folder you create then open the zip folder and right click on the background like you are creating a new folder and there is something in the right-click menu that lets you create passwords.

All you have to do is create a zip folder on your flash drive and then store anything you want to protect in that folder and then apply a password.  This way you can still store some files out of the password protected folder(s).

P.S. Sorry for being redundant

I'm pretty sure they re-enabled Youtube permission, it works at my school again.

Wow times have changed!

When I was in college I talked the network admins to letting us install DoomII shareware [cough]cracked[/cough].  Every lunch hour, and during a few tests as well, we'd fire it up.  No sound but still fun to get your frag on mid-day.

WinRAR lets you PW protect folders. The free version doesn't so...that's all I can say.

what you need mitch is a U3 flash drive.

pretty much an ordinary flash drive, but when you insert it emulates its own DVD drive and runs all its own applications like virus scanner ect.

It also has the option to be password protected so when you insert it requires a password before the flash drive can be opened.

Quite useful, they pretty much cost the same as a normal flash drive as well.
I got two 2gig models awhile back, haven't let me down since.

hope that helps

Ah, I guess I just didn't get the link between not being able to surf YouTube and running exes.
To be honest, I still don't.
