Herrow,

I am about to start to build up a brand new computer and all, and I wanted to re-install Windows. The thing is... I can not find my Windows XP Media Centre disc. Anyway I can get around this? I would prefer to not buy a new disc... I still have my keycode though, if that helps.

Should I just use the System Restore thing?

Help would be appreciated, thanks

you could always torrent it and enter your genuine code
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Your Restore CD will work only in the original machine (PC) that you bought with it. But you can find illegal copy's around the net, at your own risk

You could do system restore. Never done it myself. I re-formatted the hard drive, then got my XP recovery disk and used that.

Or

Get partition software. And check if you have an extra partition that is hidden. That is normally the recovery partition for Windows XP. Do you have your recovery disk by any chance?
Try looking if you can do a system back-up on your OS, by burning it onto a disk ( I am not sure you can ) and then partition the hard drive. And run the recovery disk on your clean partition, keeping Windows XP on the other partition.

Short answer: you're fucked. Sorry. You need to find the disc.

He doesn't need to steal it if he has a key.

He can just use a copied disk with his key. That's legit (ish).

That is true. The install disks are all identical, they're not tied to a single key. He will need to find the exact same XP edition though - i.e. it needs to be a 'Windows XP Media Center Edition' install disk - not pro', home, or any other XP edition - a media center key will not work with pro, home or other edition install disk.

Except for OEM vs retail.

Correct, again that's a 'correct edition for the key' issue - shoulda made that clear in my post - OEM, Retail and Corporate are like different 'sub-editions' of each edition.

Well I actually just found out I probably don't even have the key.

On this little shiny Microsft Sticker I have, it says:

Microsoft Product Identifier

The manufacturer of your personal computer has licensed the Microsoft products listed in this doucment. The certificate of authenticity attached to the product packaging is your assurance that the following Microsoft products you have received with your PC system are legally licensed to you from NEC Computers BV

Microsoft Word 2002
Microsoft Works 7

[Shiny sticker here]

My mother is still firm on her word, saying that we never did get a CD with it... Maybe I should call the people we bought it from and moan?

On another word though, how easy is it to "acquire" a working Vista?

Edit

I found the Product Key on the side of my computer...

if you have a prebuilt system the os disc is usualy relabled (different than if you just go buy it) and is marked operating system and put with other drivers and instal discs that come with the machine, although i have heard of they not being bundled together at all. if this is the case then id try one of the steps mentioned above, or just go buy vista.

The crack to get an indefinite 30 day trial works pretty well. No key needed for that either.

Not that I would know. I never pirated nothing, not ever. Honest.

There is a known ....bug? ..... with Vista where you can edit some files to make the 30 day trial last for 120.

Bullshit. It screws with your computer.
I know exactly how to get a permanently active one. But I don't on BF2s.

Really?

I haven't tried it myself, but everyone I know who is using it has had no problems whatsoever.

I know there are lots of fancier newer ways of bypassing activiation, but I still haven't tried any of them myself. The only one I've seen in action is the infinite day trial thingy, which I haven't seen anyone having problems with. It doesn't suprise me much though.

I suppose something like the Paradox activator might be a better bet.

A fully activated one BEFORE you install it is better and safer.
No screwing around with your comp. Fully activated before you even open it up.
