Anyone else think that the Russians are testing how far they can go before EU reacts?
They have recently started interfering with other countries domestic politics by threatening with shutting down gas suplies and with their military.

For example in Finland the parlament is discussing werther or not Finland should join NATO and Russian goverment officially commented that it would not bring security to Finland and that they would inrease their military strenght along the finnish border if we would join the alliance.

I have a feeling that the Duma doesn't give a rats ass about that statue in reality, but use that to see how the world reacts.

Expecting Estonia to keep the statue there is as farcical as asking Palestine to erect a monument to fallen Israeli soldiers, or asking the Dutch to erect a monument to the nazis.
QFT.
Here's another example:

In 1966 (the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising) the IRA blew up Nelson's Column, an old British Monument, which stood in the main thoroughfare of Dublin (O'Connell St.). Did anyone shed a tear? I don't think so. Did the Brits act like cry-babies? No sir.

The Estonians are respectfully moving the monument. The Russians should be thankful it hasn't been wired up with semtex...

Estonia can do whatever the hell they want with the statue. The fact that it's moved and not demolished shows respect to the Soviet soldiers of WWII and the Russian population in Estonia.

Embargos are set up, the UN is contacted. For what? This is a prime example of pres. Putin showing off and testing the Union. What sucks is that he might just succeed in having neigbouring countries shut up about it. I have a very distinct feeling that Finland isn't going to do jack shit. The primary reason being the exports Finland has to Russia, and the fact that Russia has a tendency to close down borders at a moments notice. I think that we're just going to sit back and wait as our "little brother" Estonia is on the receiving end of a diplomatic beating. Fuck.

Oh yeah, and the Eurovision song contest in Helsinki. With both countries participating. Loads of Russians and Estonians gathered in one place at the same time in a week. Here. That'll be fun!

Actually a little bit of history has been made around this insident. The finnish foreign minister stated that Finland will stand on Estonias side. In the past time the politicians were on Soviet Unions side what ever the situation was.

Can we sticky this?  This has got to be the most thought out and concise response Poe has ever offered. I am still in shock.

Well, here in the Baltic countries we don't see the Soviets as our liberators, more rather replacement for the Nazi's. About destroying monuments, I remember the begin of the 90's where someone went around blowing up monuments of the legionnaires (Latvians who served in the Waffen-SS, most not voluntarily) and the guys sitting in the Kreml didn't really give a shit.

Stupid commies.. (yeah, i finally know they were not real communists..)

Which is their right as a sovereign nation, and which anyone does.  Cuban blockade, for example.

That isn't domestic policy.

Which is in fact ridiculous.

No, that's a direct threat: "If you join NATO, we're going to have to increase our forces at your border, close some border stations to halt Finnish export, and maybe f**k you up in the near future"

Good thing the majority of the Finnish people atm are against joining NATO, and for keeping a "neutral country"-policy.

It's in the sense that it's Finlands desission and Russia is interfering with it.
My bad for using the wrong words. Political english isn't my strongest point.

It's going to change after the threat from Russia. They kind of broke the 'Russia is not a threat ATM' thought in Finland.

Try to be empathetic here. Up to 50,000 Soviet troops died in that region in order to liberate them from the Nazis - they should not be disrespected like that.
Yeah, they should be disrespected by having poop smeared on their graves daily.  The Soviets didn't come to liberate, they came to conquer.  If the Nazi's never went at the USSR they would have stayed their Ally.  They were both Emperial Socialist Maygots.
sorry to burst your bubble, but nazi germany wasnt socialist. it was completely opposite of socialism, known as fascism. so nazi germany was closer to what the "free world" is right now than russia.
