OK any advice is good advice... my daughter has been accepted to Cornell University. And her birthday is in a week - I need to buy her a laptop for future school work. Not really for gaming - just for academics.

On second thought - maybe a gaming laptop?

So far:
5 - Dells
1 - I hate Dells
1 - Toshiba Sattelite
1 - Aleinware
1 - Sony (ulta-portable)
1 (and a sort-of half for) - a MAC.

Price is not relevant. Any price - I can afford whatever. But realistically anything between $500-3000 US.

Could be a Windows PC.
Could be a MAC.

I will have it over-nighted. So no "needs assembly" types.

Personally, I hate Dells, so I would not recommend getting one. A very good laptop that I've seen is the Toshiba Sattelite and it goes for around $1100-$1200 (I can't confirm price because I don't own one). I have used them, I think they're great and people I know who have them think they're great. So, that's my recommendation.

i would not usually reccomend a dell for gaming but since its only for work and such that should do.

get a highend HP, personally i bought one back in 2001 for about 2000$ with a 5 year warranty and every  time i have a problem with it, they replace it with there next best model. I went from some decent 15" to a 19" over the course of 5 years. Personally they are great computers, but there costumer support is shit. But, its a great buy

Dell's warranty rocks. I've used mine so many times. Dell does suck but the laptops are worth it just cuz of the warranty, get the "complete care" warranty if shes going to be living in a dorm.

If she likes little cutesy things buy her a mac

A dell will fit her right. But C2D is a must and at least 1 GB of RAM .

I am sort of thinking why not? I mean fuck the MAC, she is savy with a PC, and might as well get all the necessaries: WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, pre-installed and hey - why not make it gamer too - why not?
