Today I saw an interesting piece on TV. They compared prices of a washing machine made by Gorenje here and in Germany, and it seems that it is cheaper by almost 40% in Germany.

So I was curious. I fired up my favorite browser and googled around. Here's what I found:

The price here in Slovenia in their on-line shop: WA61121 model action price is €399.90(used to be €446.90)
Next, I looked for the same model in the UK: WA61121 model costs £265 or €388.44

Now, let us compare the GDP per capita for both countries:
Slovenia: $25,266 (2007 estimate)
UK: $38,624

Now here's the big question. How can something(washing machine in our example) that is being manufactured here in Slovenia be cheaper when being sold abroad, while our GDP per capita is lower? They sell it cheaper, even though they have to transport it all the way to the UK?

I have other things to add, concerning lower quality products getting imported from Eastern Europe, being sold at near Western European prices here, but I am running out of time(work tomorrow). So discuss just the price difference, and we will see how the topic develops tomorrow.

There's tonnes of reasons for why these type of things happen.
I'll give you a couple:
1)New brand in the UK, need to have a competitive price so people actually buy it, so its lower than Slovenia.
2)Already a proven brand name in Slovenia (??), so no need to have it at a competitive price as people buy it anyway.

Im sure they'll be others here who will post more reasons, but there is ALWAYS a reason for price differences, its not that they want to piss you off (although sometimes it does look that way)!

The UK imports chinese and american products, which will drive the prices there down, Slovenia probably has a high tariff rate to protect its industries, so you're stuck with your expensive domestic stuff.

There could be social reasons as well....

In Germany, BMWs are still expensive, whereas if you buy one of them from Germany and have it shipped to your location overseas, you'll pay less than an actual German customer will.

For example, if I had about $20k to blow on a car, I could get a brand new 3 series for far less than I would pay here or even at a German dealership, if I bought it directly from BMW and had it shipped here.  This is true even after figuring in shipping.

Why does this happen?  Because BMWs have a high social value in both America and Germany.  Yet, the company itself just wants to sell what they make, so the factory-direct sales will gladly sell you a car at a discount as long as you aren't going to sell the vehicle later in Germany.

It's kind of funny actually....

I think it's more to do with the fact they're in the middle of nowhere...
