Umm Houston we have a problem..
How the hell does something like this slip in under the radar without MM covering it?

President Bush signed an agreement creating a "permanent body" that commits the U.S. to "deeper transatlantic economic integration," without ratification by the Senate as a treaty or passage by Congress as a law.

The "Transatlantic Economic Integration" between the U.S. and the European Union was signed April 30 at the White House by Bush, German Chancellor Angela Merkel – the current president of the European Council – and European Commission President José Manuel Barroso.

The Transatlantic Economic Council was tasked with creating regulatory convergence between the U.S. and the EU on some 40 different public policy areas, including intellectual property rights, developing security standards for international trade, getting U.S. GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Practices) recognized in Europe, developing innovation and technology in health industries, implementing RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technologies, developing a science-based plan on bio-based products and establishing a "regular dialogue" to address obstacles to investment.

It could be nothing, I am on my way to hunt for the specifics.

Edit: found the specifics.

It is legit (the agreement), and sets framework for an integrated economy, but at this point it is a committee exploring the supposed 'benefits' of such an integration.  It is a cause for concern, just like all 'free trade agreements'.

You'd think with all the oil they've been dealing with, they'd pass some over for the "servicing of the account."  Bastards....

You really see this as a sellout ?

The US needs help getting back to a sound economy so why not use a closer relationship with Europe, this should be great news for US citizens if you ask me.

I'm generally against free trade.  I prefer fair trade and some protectionism.

Fair trade i agree but that will never happend until Africa is allowed to start trading on equal terms as the rest of the world, fair trade as a global phenomenon is currenly not working the way it should and prolly never will.

What's wrong with free trade? It's the easiest way to gaurentee fair trade. If you can't produce something as well as I can, you shouldn't be producing it. Protectionism and the world bank destroy the economies of poorer nations in the name of American business.

When the crutch (oil) that hold up the US economy is gone, they'll be begging for Europe's help.  I actually think this is bad for Europe because of the reason I stated above.

yeha, and you do realise this could lead to a stability & association pact, which is the first step towards the US applying for EU membership. that'd be interesting. you'd ahve to change a fair few things.

I don't see us integrating our ecoomies anytime soon. We aren't that kosher on hitching ourselves and our currency to the political instability of the EU.

Hitching yourselves and your currency to the political instability of the EU?

I don't get it.

Not that I think that US integration with Europe is a good thing. Trade agreements, fair enough - but nothing more, beyond existing military alliances such as NATO.

Does the US meet the standards for EU membership anyway?

Nope.

National debt has to be below 60 percent of GDP.

We'd have to keep them under close scrutiny along with Turkey for human rights!

My problem was with the lack of attention this got, let alone keeping Congress out of it.

In that regard it is highly questionable, I remember our Taoiseach signing an agreement on sharing information with the US a while back without mentioning it at all in the Daíl. He drew a lot of heat on that one ...and rightly so.
