The explosion is started by a bomb thrown in by the protaganist whilst attached to the main bad guys right hand man, which damages the reactor and cause it to malfunction. Its a Russian built experimental reactor that was built with great haste so there are a few design flaws. it will be described in detail as it is the peak finale of the book and believe me, it'll be a very big boom.
