Didn't touched vanilla for 2 months now and moved on to "EA/Dice, this is how it should be done: Project Reality".
PR has stats too, but i managed not to care too much about 'em.

Stats get you emotionally attached to your character, whoever at DICE came up with the idea of implementing the idea of stats is a fricking genius, DICE / EA have made so much money due to it

No. But back when I first started playing i would only really play for ranks and that got me addicted. These days I could care less about ranks and stats, but if it wasn't there in the first place I wouldn't have played too much and probably just quit after a week or two.
