War and terrorism are real. They’re no longer subjects limited to history books. Children and young adults need only to listen to the nightly news to realize the horrors of war. Whether news takes them to the middle east, to New York, to the subway systems of London and Madrid , or to the stories of wounded or fallen soldiers, the young are forced to deal with the threats and effects of war in different way than children of the past. Mass media and web have changed their lives forever. It is now impossible to protect them from the fears connected with terrorism and global conflict. Children were watching when the Twin Towers went down. They are witnessing the suicide bombers in and around Baghdad. They are seeing the frightened citizens of war-torn regions attempt to flee their burning villages. They are noticing that war is dirty, it ruins lives, and it leaves emotional scars that last a lifetime.

Do you agree with the message in the statement above? In other words, do you sometimes feel that you need a “timeout? From the events of the real world, or have you become desensitized (less sensitive) to all of the violence because it is around you all the time? Explain.

Death from bathtub drownings is real also. That is much more likely to lead to your death than a terrorist act. Terrorism should be confronted (Kept under control), but media exposure should be proportionate to the reality of the threat.

Media sensationalism is exploited by our enemies brilliantly.

Well, thats sorta the goal...

Anyway, the idea of War has been drastically de-romanticized since the advent of television, and will continue to decline when faced with the uncensored, pervasive monster that is the Internet. As we see more of what is really going on, the people are going to eventually loose more and more will to deal with war.

Even when it's on your doorstep you eventually desensitise to violence. In the 80s it was so common for me to hear on the news about the latest IRA bomb, UVF punishment killing or LVF assassination in Northern Ireland that it didn't even feel real or worth caring about anymore. They became like stories about taxation or cats being stuck up trees. Going to the north involved getting our car searched from top to bottom, being harassed by the RUC, British soldiers brandishing their weapons from the tops of APCs and isolated incidents involving bomb scares and loyalist-republican fracas'. You just get used to it.

The fact of the matter is terrorism is a minor issue in the west - acts of terror are extremely few and far between and we're well equipped to prevent/deal with them. So as long as it stays, by and large, off my doorstep I don't give it any time because it deserves little to none.

If there is one thing I really don't miss, it was sitting with the feet up watching the telly and next thing there would be a  warning that would come up on the screen "would all key holders in "whatever town" please check your premises" and then having to go look for bombs in the shop - I use to tell my boss to fuck off, he needn't think I was looking for incendiary devices for £1.50 an hour, no fucking way, didn't fancy losing an arm!

Or the police would come in and say you have to vacate the shop there is a bomb alert (well at least the IRA would phone a warning) and you would have oul doll's trying to get a bargain off you before the shop closed, and people just dandered up the street like it was normal, no running, or, screaming, and next thing you'd hear a 500 pound bomb blast - No I don't miss it at all..
