we guessed it was the keyboard interferring with the signal

Yes, I do. But how am I going to work? I have no mouse then. I will try out that theory. Thanks.Alone+EasyTarget wrote:

Actually, it cannot be. My wireless connection is encrypted and needs a password to get on.Zimmer wrote:

My signal strength always varies from very low to very high. but it never loses connection completely, I am guessing it is because I am using a RangeMax Netgear adapter which supposedly turn "dead spots into hot spots". Yeah, maybe it does, but not keeping the strength of the signal.gvers wrote:
Well if you get good speeds downstairs and bad upstairs it not a sky issue its a wireless signal issue or a PC issue. What connection speed and signal strength does the netgear card report? Have you tried moving the ariels to slightly different location? If you can't get a good signal consider a repeater or hard wire the PC with cat 5.
Check out adslguide.org.uk
Doesn't matter, it still interferes with the signal I think.Zimmer wrote:

Jenspm is right at addressing the interference. If you have a lot of cordless phones, cellphones, TV, or any sources that emit RF signals between the router and your laptop then you have an interfered signal. I dunno but I prefer wired connection over wireless for stability rather than mobility.Jenspm wrote:

If you have a PCI card, this shouldn't be a problem though....
That makes no difference. The problem would be if the RF signals interfere with each other. What frequency band are the devices running in?Zimmer wrote:

I never said in the first place it was Skys broadband. I had already proven that in my first post. It is the router they have supplied with the package. It is not powerful enough.Bertster7 wrote:

How strong is the signal you recieve from the router (in dB - Netstumbler can be useful for this)?
Have you tried wiring the Mesh computer into the router and checked the performance?
There is no way this is a problem with Sky's broadband service. It is a problem with your local network setup. Whether it is an issue with interference, with your router or with your wireless adapter, is unclear.
Personally I don't see the point in using wireless networking for desktop PCs - laptops it's great for, because they are all about mobility, desktops don't tend to move about much, just do your wiring properly and it won't be an issue.
Well, since the G7 runs in the 2.4GHz band you could try running it in 802.11a (or even better 802.11n @ 5GHz) mode at 5GHz and see if that helps, if your router will let you do that. You could get a signal booster to have in the room with the Mesh PC. You could get a new router. You could try changing channels, but that probably won't have much impact - it might help a bit though. You could use a different mouse.Zimmer wrote:

My signal is -74dBs.
The only interference is my cordless G7 mouse.
I got the point, I know wired is better than wireless, but right now I do not have the choice of wires, so gimme a break.

It may well do. It's hard to say for sure. A new wireless adapter might do it or a new router or playing about with settings on the router - which you should be able to access wirelessly if you can access the internet through it.Zimmer wrote:
lol. My G7 is going nowhere.
I cannot change the setting of the Router. It is downstairs and not connected to a PC.
Would a repeater do the trick?
Or you can just run ipconfig from a command prompt to find the default gateway address.gvers wrote:
Check if any other routers in range are using the same channel. Change the wireless channel in the router and see if it helps try a few different ones. Rangemax only works if the router and the card are rangemax. I don't think the sky router is (isn't it a re-badged DG834GT).
The routers address would probably be 192.168.0.1 in your browser.
So you are telling me this card I have is useless.gvers wrote:

What is the speed of your Sky broadband?justice wrote:
Zimmer I had EXACTLY the same problem as you. We recently got sky broadband, alll pc's in the house were working fine apart from Mine. I spent days and days trying to fix it, but I kept getting a "limited connection" of 512 kb/s.
This is basically the answer.
I phoned sky and netgear, they had no fucking clue.
So I started buying a few different adapters that sky had reccomended to me. The 3rd one I bought, worked
http://www.netgear.com/Products/Adapter … WG111.aspx
It's actually a wireless USB adapter from netgear made specifically for the sky boradband router.
Good luck.
Not useless but not operating in rangemax pre n standard. It should work fine but not to its max capabilities. Have you tried repositioning the ariels.Zimmer wrote:

8Mb/s too....my router is downstairs too...I get 90 % signal strength from here.Zimmer wrote:

Plus, I highly doubt that will reach the router, not even thinking about it connecting.

Done everything, I even moved my computer closer to the door. Nothing.gvers wrote:

Ill give you a score for it
Have you phoned sky and netgear? you should explain clearly all that is going on, and read your router and adapter setting to them, they may be able to "tweak" the settings to resolve it. They didn't manage to fix mine because my adapter wasn't sufficient, but you never know.Zimmer wrote:

Does this mean I will not get a better connection than 512kb/s with this?
Damn. I may as well go for WG111.
Sorry that's the adapter I meant, not the WG111.Zimmer wrote:
