Psychiatrists openly admitting at the 2006 APA convention that they have no scientific tests to prove mental illness and have no cures for these unproven mental illnesses.

I have always knew and believed that because there isn't a model from where to judge which people are "crazy" and which ones are "sane".

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a lie... why do some people who are chronically depressed feel better after good therapy and/or good medicinal treatment?

Maybe but it helps people, and it's better than nothing (or than Scientology).

They don't feel, they are forced to feel via medication or just by simply venting out. But the issue here is that they don't, by any manners, have a proof to say that someone is nuts.

His idea is that the label "mental illness" is just something we call behavior we don't like. Psychiatry doesn't cure people of mental diseases, it teaches people to obey society's norms.

It doesn't matter... you simply don't get it.

Look my sister has a MENTAL ILLNESS, it doesn't matter what the exact physical cause is. There is no cure for it either. It is only treatable with medication. And the medication helps (it does not cure, and no one ever told us it would). It helps her cope with the reality of having a disorder (she has OCD and schizophrenia).

_________

Fuck Dianetics! A care-givers goal (in this case the Psychiatric goal) is:
Treatment of schizophrenia involves taking the appropriate medication and getting personal support.

I just think people should know this video was produced by Scientologists.  I don't know if that was clear to everyone off the bat, but I think everyone should be aware of that.  The Citizens Commission for Human Rights is a advocacy group founded by the Church of Scientology.  Here's Dr. Thomas Szasz who appeared in the video with one of our favorite fellow debaters.

I suffer from clinical depression that almost crippled my life at one point nearly 7 years ago. I had always had it but not realised it. Medical science has made my life full and rewarding, something I viewed as inconceivable before that. I had no real concept of what it was like to be 'happy' or to have 'self esteem'. I am indebted to those who supported me, my own perseverance and recognition of the fact it was a medical condition, my decision to overturn my original stance of not taking medicine and finally to the pharmacists and medical community itself.

Are you still taking meds? Those things are very dangerous in long term use.

I'm guessing not. Pharmecuticals are rarely, if ever, tested in long-term studies. Most drugs are very dangerous. After all, you don't ususally think of ingesting chemicals which have a half-life as healthy. Add to that, at least in the states, Doctors face a huge conflict of interests as they are wined and dined (often literally) by big pharma. Medical science isn't science.

Yeah, I'm sure his doctor knows better than me, just like my dad's doctor did while the lithium my dad was taking fucked him over from the inside.

I am not going to debate someone else's medical treatment with you, but if you point was that drugs can be dangerous, thanks for enlightening me.

Thomas Szasz has been saying these things since before Tom Cruise was born. He's not a Scientologist, he's a real person.

I didn't say he was one.  I think its funny that you imply Scientologists aren't real people.

Lithium is a whole 'nother ball game from what I take. I'm taking a modern SSRI that has little or no side effects whatsoever. To be honest I can hardly remember what it feels like to be in the state I was - all I know is that I'd rather not lapse back into it. The drug is designed to increase the brain's production of serotonin to 'meet demand'. When taken for a considerable period one then ramps off the drug gradually and your brain supposedly picks up the slack of serotonin production. I intend to ramp down soon.

I really meant to refer to Tom Cruise. Hard to separate the person from the movie characters. Come to think of it, it's probably hard to separate Scientologists from stereotypes of Scientologists.

Would you call a person who jumps off a building a sane person? This specific person is a woman, tall and great looking, happily married with 3 children. She had clinical depression, and took daily medication prescribed by her psychiatrist. She was the mother of a friend of mine. She had a normal, happy life.

One day an endocrinologist prescribed her some diet pills, as she wanted to loose weight (as all women do...) without knowing she was on other medication. The diet pills cancelled out the effects of the other medication, and she committed suicide in a weeks time.

My friend's mother would still be alive today if it were up to psychiatry. To me, thats undeniable proof that it is as important any other medical field, but probably the hardest one to understand.
