What is your stance on education and how willing students are to be taught? There are some people who say that an education is important but you can never force a student to learn something and like it. I'd go so far to say that close to half of the students in school do work to pass a test and then forget about it. They'll then go on to find a job that requires the least amount of mental work possible.
Then you have the group that contains those who understand the value of a good education. It is necessary to be successful and it is a good way to gain self-confidence and satisfaction. My view is that it is an essential part of a well-rounded person. Everybody has something that they're interested in, so there is always something to learn about. Primary and secondary schooling seems to provide some common ground between everyone that is ultimately a good thing to be able to have.

Even though the public education system in the US sucks I would go. I've learned how valuable an education is, and would do anything to keep it.

Yes I would go, I don't think that many other people would go though. It would be a lot easier to get a job as an educated student if half the population didn't attend school.

Haha... I need to ditch more, I haven't once since the beginning of the year... actually, yeah. I did once to go to Disney land with a friend, but my dad called up saying I had "family obligations"

Of course I would still go! In fact, once I graduate college in a few years, I'm still going to go farther and get a Masters Degree (Civil Engineering). I value my education, and though I'm kinda lazy and unmotivated when it comes to school, I like learning new things. Plus a lot of people who don't continue their education are completely ignorant and can't understand the complicated world around them. Not to mention I don't want to be stuck in a dead-end job the rest of my life. It'd be nice to move up the career ladder and make good money so I can provide my family with a decent living instead of living paycheck to paycheck.

And it really pisses me off when people say "Oh the _____ [usually "American"] education system sucks, blah blah blah." It doesn't really matter how it compares to other nations, you get out of it what you put into it! People can go to a shitty school in the ghetto and come out geniuses because they put the time and effort into their education. But those who just show up and not try, they're the ones who don't learn anything (and coincidentally, they're the ones who complain the most about the education system, and think that knowledge should just be given to them).

Honestly? No. I would rather learn things on my own pace at this point. I'd get textbooks and read from them while still being able to be social. I still have the desire to learn (a great one at that), just not in a public manner.

It's the one sentiment of adult patronization that I found the most repulsive as a kid, because they knew and I knew that it was bullcrap. Relating it to Battlefield 2, a player with 3000 hours could suck donkey balls compared to a player with 300.

Yeah, but we're so much more knowledgeable.

Intelligence is useless without knowledge.

Relating it to Battlefield 2 (sort of (the analogy isn't quite as good as yours (but go with me here))) - if the player with 3000 hours knows how to fly one of the attack helicopter, but is rubbish at everything else, and the player with 300 hours couldn't fly to save his life, but is otherwise teh leetest player ever, the knowledgeable 3000hours idiot would pwn teh leet 300hours genius.

Even being in school now, I would stay if I had the choice. Maybe not so much to learn things that I personally hold important, but for skills and credentials to use in a good job later on. Honestly, I don't learn much in school that I ever really use for anything but school, and I don't consider much of it important other than for college and a job. The only thing from school I use in day to day life is Spanish, and that's just for fun. The stuff I learn here, in the DST, is more personally interesting and important than most stuff I learn in school.

No, what I am saying is that an adult has a greater understanding of what an education means, because chances are, an adult has first hand experience with the benefits of knowledge.

Children, on the other hand, lack the experience, which is vital. It is easy for a 14-13 year old to say that they wouldn't go to school if they didn't have to, because chances are, they don't have the experience that adults have.

Its about experience really. Knowledge is important, but experience is what makes or breaks a person. Children are limited in their experience (of no fault of their own) just by how long they have been alive.

The second half, is that I've meet a lot of kids (I myself was one) who liked to think that they are "Smarter" than the rest of the kids their age, which, I believe makes them more apt to say that "Of course they would still go," when really they are just feeding their own ego by saying that.

I voted yes - but I probably wouldn't have gone in the first place. I would go now, simply because I know how valuable it is - but I wouldn't have gone had I not been forced at the age of 6 or 7...
I would have gone for a couple of days, then stayed home for a while, then gone again. I would have gone to school when I was bored.
I may know now how useful an education is, but I certainly didn't know back then.

Of course, however I haven't had by law to go to school for 3 years now. That said though, I've probably learned more things that are actually useful to me through Discovery Channel.

Was talking with a building contractor the other day about this. He employs a kid who left school at 15. It was illegal. The kid is now 18 and has served his time as a bricklayer. (he is currently building my house and doing a dam good job too) Hes on dam near what I earn a week and didn't have to spend 6 years in college and run up massive debt for the pleasure.

I think much to big an empathises was put on college education, which means I know at least 5-6 friends with degrees who work in shops and other low skilled jobs now. The guys who went on site and learned a trade like roofing, plumbing etc are now heavily in demand and can charge big big money. Its now went the other way with the college educated ppl making less because there are more of them that the positions and jobs they were educated to do.
