hey guys I just upgraded my pc (cpu, gpu, chipset, ram) and was wondering why windows has detected by new hdd (Samsung 500GB SATA2) as a SCSI drive and SATA. Isn't this a mismatch of terms (kind of like saying SATA/IDE)?

Also do SATA drives normally have the option to eject like a usb stick? I wondering what would happen if I ejected my C:? If this is not normal is related to the above problem.

Any ideas on how to make it not ejectable?

definitely not normal...probably some issue with your bios/mobo...couldnt tel you what exactly...have you checked for mobo driver updates?

1. What SATA chipset is on your motherboard?

It's almost certainly a SATA->SCSI->PCI bridge style controller - strictly speaking, SCSI is an interface type, as is PCI, as is SATA - all that is happening is that because the Windows XP setup program won't recognise SATA, but it will recognise SCSI, the SATA controller pipes itself through a SCSI controller that is attached to the PCI bus.

In short: this is normal.

2. the SATA interface does support 'hot-swapable' (ejectable) drives, so yes, an eject option is normal.

3. Ejecting your C:\ drive would, I think, be a very bad idea.

4. There may be a BIOS setting to make it non-hot-swapable.

no ive only just gotten the drivers sp2 etc installed, the mobo is the gigabyte ds3p,cpu- E6600,ram- corsair 2GB 800MHz,gpu- radeon X1950 pro 512 MB (the 8800GTS is over AU$1000 , 4 x the cost of the x1950)

I dont think its drivers or bios settings. thanks for your help though

deepblade - read my post.

You are correct it is not a drivers or BIOS settings issue. It IS NORMAL. Ignore anyone that tells you otherwise.

See:

Mine is the same.

IT IS NORMAL.

i only posted what i did above from personal experience... my mobo (Intel Desktop board) arrived with faulty RAID drivers, and lo, there was an update on their site. figured it might be the same way. if you find a way  to set it non-swappable, that would be a good thing to do...accidents do happen...

Yeah, yeah, I wasn't being critical. I just knew what the answer is. And it's normal.

Well, actually having hot-swappable SATA, as far as I can gather, is kind of a rarity.

Nice feature if you need it, but as you say - if deepblade can find a way to disable that it would be a wise thing to do.

I think it would be relatively safe - I'd guess windows would just crash very rapidly, possibly blue screen straight off, but then a reboot, I would have thought, would bring everything back.

Actually, if you're feeling brave, deepblade, d'u wanna give it a try see what happens and report back to the forum?

I'm kinda curious now...

I bet $5 on 'nothing happens' if you press eject.

Never EVER download CMOS updates.  If something goes wrong, you will not recover.  Don't Flash it either.  The two stupidest things you could do with a new board.

I think "never ever" is taking it a bit far - but the sentiment is right - with a new mobo/card/whatever - if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

yeah, i think thats kinda redic. i had to flash the bios about 3 times before my video card decided to work...but i agree on the mobo updates...only if you have to. definitely a good idea to look to see whats out there in terms of updates...if you have an issue, sometimes there will be a driver update to fix it, which can save days of troubleshooting.
