Now, I think you may have noticed ( or you do it yourself ) that people are not too sure about someone else's actions. Even if they are concrete and are clear cut actions. I am taking about physical actions here.

I have been in a lift countless number of times ( duh ) and I have noticed that people don't like someone else doing a job for them. A simple one at that.

Pressing the lift button.

I was in a lift with 2 other people - a man and a woman, both in their 30s - and I pressed the button to FLOOR NUMBER 3.
There was a scuffle of feet. Then guess what?
One after the other, they BOTH pressed FLOOR NUMBER 3. Now...is this because they didn't trust the lift recognising a digital code being sent down cable to the motor? Or is it because they were just plain stupid?

Same happens with WAIT buttons on traffic lights. You either don't press them because they are already lit, or press them because they are not lit. But what did the woman do that was behind me? Press it twice. Once I had pressed it. I mean...talk about stupidity.
There are some traffic lights that are permanently lit, yet still I see the same 10 people press them every day.

The same thing happened in reverse today - a woman just stood beside the traffic light and waited. Waited for 10 minutes. I watched her, shaking my head slowly. Then another woman ( this one had common sense ) came along and....PRESSED THE WAIT BUTTON.

It wasn't lit in the first place... I think the woman just hoped, that magically, the traffic lights would change red just for her.

Do you guys see this a lot? Or is it just me in my own fantasy world?

I think people who do this are the ones who have "I am insecure with my life" written across their foreheads.

The faster you press the elevator buttons, the faster it goes.

I see this all the time!
Especially at traffic lights.
There is like 10 people waiting and they all press the button.
It is just as if they fear that all the other 9 or so people didn't push the button tright.
As if it takes some special kind of tactic to push the button..

I sometimes do that.

If a lift is taking a long time to come (or lights are taking a long time to change), sometimes I'll press the button loads. I know full well that it won't make any difference, but I do it anyway. It's certainly nothing to do with insecurities, I think it's more down to frustration (sort of "c'mon, c'mon, hurry up!" mentality).

Interesting observation though.

Qft. Lifts/Elevators are a fine piece of machinery.

Ah, no. I do that as well, out of frustration.

I am talking about the times when there is no rush, its a simple button press, everyone can see it has been pressed, yet they will press it again calmly. As if they do not trust the traffic lights/lifts.

I noticed the same thing....after you press the button for which floor, the button is lit so you know the lift or elevator is going to stop on the floor, but some people keep pressing it. I think it is part of insecurity or anxiety.

Absolutely. It's simple physics. The more energy you put into the system the faster you'll go.

I know what you mean.

I suppose it could be insecurity. Or stupidity. Who knows...

We need to get someone with some spare time to volunteer to go and stand around by some pedestrian crossing with a clipboard (a clipboard is essential, if you just asked someone why they'd pressed the button they'd think you were nuts) to ask the people who do it some questions.

I've noticed the same thing on buses.  Someone will press the bell which sounds loudly the entire length of the bus and then seconds later someone else presses it as if the driver won't stop if only one person wants to get off.

Ugh. I was about to tell the OP to mind his own business, but you bring up one of my ultimate pet peeves. I take a city bus home from school every day, and I see that shit all the time. I don't know if other busses have this, but there is a wire that runs the length of the bus that you pull for the bell. Almost daily I see two people stand up from their seats at the same time, and then both grab for the wire simultaneously.

I wouldn't say it's insecurity or stupidity. People are just weird.

Yup, that just happened 2 hours to go me. But this time it was like 17 times it got pressed.
I wonder what went through the drivers mind at that moment in time.

Elevators are fun.

Ever see the candid camera where they get all the people in one to face the opposite way to the door. The one person who isn't in on it always turns round to face the random wall too. It's fun to try at stations. Stand on the platform and confidently face the direction you know the train isn't coming from, see how many people you can convince to turn around too. Bonus points if it's the end of the line.

I've seen drivers drive past the stop and let everyone off at the other side of town

Mind you the bus was chock full of school kids on the way home and they had been making tunes with the bell for half a mile

The one that gets me is when I'm on the bus; like you said people will push the "stop bus" button despite that it has been pressed several times already, made a bing noise each time and a "BUS STOPPING" light is illuminated at the front.

But what I don't understand is the stop in town.  Now, there is no way the bus wouldn't stop in the City Centre regardless of whether the button was pressed but people still push it furiously as if the bus driver is thinking "I won't stop at this main stop, the one that's written in huge letters across the front display, I doubt anyone wants to get off here", makes me smile everytime.

It's because, if people press the button themselves it puts their mind at ease that, whatever they pushed will indeed work.

If you don't push the button and it takes a bit too long, you start to get...."iffy".

I guess it's human behaviour.  For example, go into town, stand somewhere and just look up at the sky and just stay there.  You'd be amazed how many people will stand near you and look up as well.

If you point as well, you get an even better reaction.

It would be perfectly obvious to them that what they were doing was insane, if they stopped to think.
But, really, looking at the way the world works, it's pretty obvious that the vast majority of people do not stop to think unless some outside cause forces them to.

Let me rephrase that for emphasis;
Most people will run on autopilot, unless the outside world hits them in the face with a 'Clue by Four'.
Wel, maybe so.

But the woman who was in the lift waited about 30 seconds ( we had started to go up ) before she pressed the button that was already lit and was the next lift stop.

The more you spam the button at traffic lights, the less time you have to wait.

I think it's more a matter of habits than anything else. If I see someone press an elevator button, I will mark it absently, not really paying attention, and proceed to press it too, simply out of habit... I can be an absent minded person at times.

Murder the two who dare'd try to press the button after you pressed it, stash their corpses up in the roof panel of the lift. Throw the woman who dare press the buttom after you into on-coming traffic.

On a more serious note , I can't remember it happening to me in the lift, but then again I don't exactly use them often (use the stairs). For traffic lights I have had that before, but not too often, you would think if you saw someone at the lights waiting that they already pushed it, thats what I would presume.

People don't understand buttons. Yes, it's been pressed already, and the light is on, but you want to be SURE it's picked it up.
And you don't want to miss out.
