Lock n load, man.  It's a blast to target shoot.  Have fun!

Edit: The shotty is the better option for home with 00 buckshot.  That's what I have.  Loved my pistol, but had to sell it when I needed money last year.

You are in Michigan...Isn't that whole state just one huge gun range?  haha j/k m8

srsly tho, everyone I know who lives in MI, carries heat...
Used to live in MI . . . ah, the good ol days.  Now I live in WI.  No carrying here.  Thanks a lot Gov. Doyle!  You're a friggin idiot!

i would have no idea on the cost for chicago, i buy my own ammo (6 bucks for 15 friggin shots)
and i shoot on my uncles property in the country. good times. enjoy!

I would also recommend starting out with a 22 (22LR, LR stands for Long Rifle, but it is a very common pistol cartridge) pistol and then moving to a standard size 9mm (9x19mm, 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum = all the same cartridge) pistol.
Once you feel comfortable with the 9mm, try out a 45acp.

Anyway...this is going to make me come off sounding like an idiot.  But...wtf do I do?  Do I just go to a range and tell them I've never fired a gun before but that I want to try it?  I'm hoping I don't need to buy one first.  And, what kind of costs am I looking at here?  Is this something I can do when I have an hour or so of free time?  Or should I make sure I have more time available...?

Throw me a bone here, people.
Some gun stores have indoor shooting ranges, your probably looking at spending no more than 50 dollars for an hour of renting the range and renting the gun and buying the ammo. The people there can instruct you on how to shoot.

Hahaha, let's take it one step at a time though...if I've never fired a handgun, I'm not about to go out and buy a shotgun.

Besides, I just want to scare off intruders, not vaporize them...and the wall behind them.
Meh... This is by far better than a .12 gauge.

there is a lot of technique when firing a handgun, but just get used to the feel of it, honestly your probably not gonna hit shit the first couple of times you shoot.  to get accruate you need practice, and a lot of it.   when i first started shooting when i  was around 7 i started out a .22 worked my way through up to a .308, 30-06 and 7mm mag for rifles and 12 ga for a shotty.  i am very proficient with long guns and shot guns, i go trap shooting (clay pigeons) and have shot a few possibles in my time (25 for 25, 100% hit rate).  in the Marine Corps i was a 6th award expert, and we shot as far out as 500 yards, in all six times at the range to shoot for score at 500 yards i hit the bullseye 57 out of 60 times (i don't know what happend to the 3 stray bullets, shitty spotters i suppose). when i first shot a hand gun, i was so embarrasseed that i couldnt hold a good pattern that i wanted to stop right there on the spot, but my Dad told me that it would take time and practice to become good, and of course he was right.  after lots of practice i can finally say that i can hold my own with a hand gun, at 25 yards i can hold about 3.5" group, and the closer the target gets the tighter the pattern gets.  i usualy practice point shooting at distances of 3 ft to 15 ft, that is where most gun fights happen.  the 25 yard thing, well lets just say if you shot someone at that distance your going to jail for murder.

TMo a few suggestions

-Start off with a pistol; it's not as fun as an MP5 but far more accurate

-Forget lousy trainers; buy some MSX for real life and activate the aimbot. Set it to aim at the chest for best accuracy, and turn on the wallhacks to show any criminals, muggers, and rapists

-Once you've mastered activating teh aimbot and the wallhax, buy a G36E

-Nobody will ever rob you, mug you, or break into your home

Heres what you do. Call up a few ranges where you live...Ask them ALL the same questions you're asking us. Problem solved, the end.

MP5 is plenty accurate especially when using a shoulder stock. The more control you have over a firearm the more accurate you can be. Also a MP5 is going to have a longer barrel than most pistols, which result in more accurate shots. Firing is full-auto however takes technique.

I would bet you that someone who has never shot a firearm before could shoot a full-auto MP5 more accurately than they could shoot a full-auto Glock 18 (pistol). I would make the same bet in semi-auto.

An American that hasn't fired a gun, damn! lol. I've fired a few things, a double barrel shotgun being one, packs a real hard a punch when fired.

Read the rest of the post, it was a nod to how BF2's MP5 is depressingly terrible

It is both.  It shoots a .410 (shotgun) and the .45 long (pistol cartridge).  The barrel is rifled so that it disperses the shot more rapidly than the smooth bore.  Did you see the dispersion damage it did to the target?  My point is that it is small enough to fit in your night stand and more importantly when you walk around the corner of you hall.... Suppose you've got your big .12 gauge.. The intruder sees your barrel coming around the corner and grabs the barrel  of the shotgun. With the Judge, that doesn't happen.

The reason it is called the Judge is because well Judges here in the US have it up there on the bench with them.

Here is the original... My Brother had one.. The thing felt like a hunk of metal flare gun.

http://www.thunder5.com/docs1.html

She wasn't rifled, and the thing would give ya powder burns every now and then.  There was a special trick to get the cylinder open. It wasn't as easy as pushing the release in the front of the cylinder.  It reminded of an A-10 for some reason...  Ugly but tough.

About how much would it cost to rent a gun and buy ammo?  Not that it matters, but I don't want to walk in there with like $20 and have it cost $50.  I also don't want to walk in there with $100 and have it cost $20.

...instruction on weapons handling?  Pfft, I'll just assume I know what I'm doing.
for most ranges you have to pay to rent the rifle if you don't have one and then pay for the ammo.

Also get the rifle snugly in your shoulder and figure out how to use the sights before even loading it. that said ALWAYS OBEY THE RANGE OFFICER

If you need help, take a class or ask the Range officer. do not be affraid to ask ever, thats what they're there for.

Well, you're not going to be carrying in Illinois...legally anyway (and breaking firearms laws is a BIG mistake).  Illinois is one of two states that have banned carrying (both open and concealed).

Have fun! Shooting is a blast. (bad pun, but it's true)
