Migden last year voted for a new law that takes effect in July 2008 that will impose a minimum fine of $20 for anyone caught using a cell phone while driving without a headset, ear bud or other technology that frees both hands.

It's funnier if you are an American subject to these bullshit laws.

We've had a similar law here for ages, and I agree with it.

It has been proven that using a cell phone while drive greatly increases your chances of being in or causing an accident.

We have a much larger fine, I believe in the region of €80 and two penalty points on your license. When you get 12 points you loose your license for a while.

Needs to happen, volumes of crashes have been happening because people are driving along on the phone not watchin anything. I've even seen people texting while driving at high speeds.

We've fairly recently gotten a law that bans using a non-hands-free mobile while driving here (Ireland) too.  If you're caught you get points on your licence (usually 2, 4 if you contest it and lose) and if you hit 12 points you lose your licence.  (There are plenty of other things that give you points too, like speeding.)

I'm all in favour of it.  There's plenty of evidence out there that if you're on the phone you aren't concentrating on your driving.  Forcing people to use hands-free kits helps a bit with the problem, at least they're less physically distracted.  There's a strong argument for an outright ban on using any kind of phone while driving, it's just bloody dangerous.

I don't see the point in a $20 fine.  It's not a significant amount of money to anyone who drives a car and owns a mobile phone.  There's no point in a legal punishment if it's not significant to be effective.  A $100 fine might have more of an impact.

ATG, here in Chicago, we've had it worse since 7/'05.

$50 for using it in city limits.
$200 if there is an incident while using it in city limits.

This seems more reasonable for me. But I bet the fines here will stay the same.

What I like, is the asshole politician who voted for it getting caught breaking that same law.

Technically using a mobile phone while driving without a handsfree kit is illegal in Ireland and can get you penalty points on your licence. Pick up twelve points and you're banned from driving.

Man I love this law.  Just today some fuckstain in front of me stopped at a green light because he wasn't paying attention.....guess what he was doing?  That's right, talking on the cell phone.

Dont know the fine but that`s a law in Norway since 2 years back i think.

Makes good sense to keep the concentration on the road.

Lol @ hypocritical politicians. But I don't think it's surprising because the law penalizes absent-minded behavior. She might have been thinking about whatever business she had to do on the phone and forgotten she was not supposed to be holding it while she drove.

I have lived in NYC so long my driving skills have really deteriorated. While on a Cell I am  positively lethal. I pull over. I do all my driving GTA style.
