I'd guess it's just some kind of protest or statement. Maybe local Muslims don't like the Danish government's stance on something. Maybe someone got drunk and thought it'd be funny.

I'm not sure if there's likely to be anything more serious than a "hey look at us" or "Muslims are Danish too" statements to this.

The tradition of vandalising the Little Mermaid statue continues as activists set a dildo in the diminutive fairy tale figure

The Little Mermaid, Copenhagen's biggest tourist magnet, is also a magnet for the city's vandals.

In the past few decades, the statue sitting on the waterfront has had its head cut off, been blown up, painted, as well as serving as the butt of scores of less destructive pranks.

The latest prank put a dildo in the hand of the most famous woman in Denmark as women's rights activists marked International Women's Day, reported the Copenhagen Police on Wednesday.

'A message found at the scene indicates that this has something to do with Women's Rights Day. Among other things, the date 8 March is underscored, so we're investigating the matter as politically motivated vandalism,' said Detective Chief Inspector Frank Jensen.

In addition to the dildo, the vandals dumped green paint over the copper statue. Both were removed as soon as they were discovered.
