"WASHINGTON — U.S. carbon-dioxide emissions dropped slightly last year even as the economy grew, according to an initial estimate released this week by the Energy Information Administration.

The 1.3 percent drop in carbon-dioxide emissions marks the first time U.S. pollution linked to global warming has declined since 2001 and the first time since 1990 that it has gone down while the economy was thriving. Carbon-dioxide emissions declined in both 2001 and 1991, in large part because of economic slowdowns during those years.

In 2006 the U.S. economy grew 3.3 percent, a fact President Bush touted this week as he hailed the government's "flash estimate" that the country's carbon-dioxide emissions dropped by 78 million metric tons last year.

"We are effectively confronting the important challenge of global climate change through regulations, public-private partnerships, incentives and strong economic investment," Bush said in a statement. "New policies at the federal, state, and local levels — such as my initiative to reduce by 20 percent our projected use of gasoline within 10 years — promise even more progress."

A number of factors helped reduce emissions last year, according to the government, including weather conditions that reduced heating and air-conditioning use, higher gas prices that cut consumer demand at the pump, and a greater reliance on natural gas.

Critics of the administration, including Democratic lawmakers and environmentalists, said the one-year decline did not prove Bush's voluntary approach to cutting greenhouse gases is working. They noted that the emissions have been rising worldwide since 1990."

Next thing ya know, we'll need MORE Co2 to go back to 'normal'

And yet, I'm still can't see the skyline from the bridge through the haze when I come home from school.

We've still got work to do.

But what happens if the average temperatures yearly drop 2 degrees, are you going to 'add' more Co2 to make it warmer?

Touché. This is why I tend to stay out of D&ST. Ah well, back to the Junk Drawer for me!

Probably had nothing to do with the super high cost of gas and people driving less, or the weather conditions, or the fact that you can't accuately measure this and it is a bunch of best guess bull shit.

Not that I care about any of this, just more stupidy and someone taking credit for it.

It shows America, despite her critics, is trying to do something about it.  WD USA

Of course 1.3% is great, but unless India & China voluntarily do something then that 1.3% is worthless in the face of global CO2 levels ... (that is, assuming you believe the Global Warming fear evangelists).

That's a first on this forum. Not sarcastically that is.

This whole global warming thing is like a religion... Seriously.

A first for me, or a first for the forum? Aye, credit should be given when its due, and it's good to see the US moving in the right direction.

Well if Europe and Japan could sell all of their cars in the states, but unfortunately some bastard  is paying the govt a lot of money to make up the lame excuse of their cars not being within emissions guidelines it would have been probable close to 5%.

It doesn't show squat. It's a meaningless number if you don't know the cause. And coincidence is not causality.

The Global Warming issue is about economics. Whilst there is a duty to reduce pollution around the world and look for alternative energy solutions, it's big business for energy companies, government, global warming activists and even pop stars. If the whole global warming issue was put into its correct context, that is the whole of the solar system is warming and the Earth is just on its natural cycle, billions of dollars would be lost over night. I think the important thing to remember here is that this whole issue has snowballed into a giant economic contribution to the state/treasury/corporations/energy companys (& pop stars).

After watching a documentary on Europes evolutionary cycle, it occured to me that there had been several ice age/warming cycles from then untill now, so why all of a sudden has it become a man made problem?

Please don't think that i'm denying global warming is happening, because it probably is, but not at the hand of human evolution.

There're plenty of scientists, not polliticians that didn't quite make the head administrative position available for grabs six years ago or so with an agenda, suggesting from research that global warming is due to solar conditions and infact man has not produced enough CO2 in it's industrial history to even make an effect on the worlds climate. My only conclusions are to follow the money trail and as money makes the world go round, I think it's quite obvious we're not being told the complete truth about global warming.

So yea, well done USA for starting to make a difference, but could we not atleast see some more of these green taxes being put into advance energy research with 0% environmental by-product. And not into the pockets of the wrong people?
