I had this idea a year ago...Veterans Guarding Veterans.

But I am not sure how to get it started.
best thing, I believe -- we build a website, I can advertise with my website and we can contact the VA about more volunteers and we start spreadig the word ---- when we go to guard a cemetery we contact the local media on what we are doing to that the word spreads quicker on our cause
That is what I was thinking...but you are talking to a computer illiterate jarhead.

Freedom of speech would be advocating for the right to say something disagreeable.

This however was a desecration of a grave which I would guess is a crime in all 50 states.

It sounds like the only people who advocated for this were the neo-Nazi/skinheads who did it; and I'm sure we can all agree that it was disgusting.

Wow, overreact much?

Yes, because free speech gives you the right to destroy the property of others

You should be able to find a free host with some fairly easy to use built in software (homestead springs to mind, but I'm not sure if they're still around), or just try to find someone with technical skills through a veterans association (with all the computers the US army relies there must be someone with the know-how to built a website).  Then the only problem becomes funding for the space on the web if you don't want to use a free host, and you might find businesses willing to donate.

Has it occurred to any that, given that they painted on swastikas, maybe they're ungrateful because they wanted the other side to win, as opposed to not understanding the sacrifice they made?

Not that I think the other side should have won, but calling someone disrespectful for disrespecting their enemy seems a little silly.

Oh, really? I thought it was freedom of expression.
I hope that your comment is in jest.  How would you feel if I spray painted on your car a swastika?  Its destruction of private property.

This reminds me of what Edwards said on his website to protest the War in Iraq this weekend - he actually encouraged people to protest Memorial Day parades...how Un-American.

i could see that point. however i highly doubt it is really people that feel that way.....i find it more likely what seremaker said about kids being attention whores.
i dont know about down there, but here the teenage years usually means bashing some mailboxes etc. sometimes things can go to far, which happened in this case....maybe.

edit: marine if you need any help with your "business" idea, i would love to help.

You honestly think it was more likely done as a joke than by a group of neo-nazis?

Im sure that could be arranged. When the Sheriff finds them, Im sure we could make this happen, right Leathernecks?

I highly doubt this was the work of anyone protesting the war, but I am sure many will assume it was.

in this situation, yes i do.
the indicators for me would the hand drawn swastikas, any jackass with a computer can put together something better than that.
besides, lurking in the shadows is not something that group is known for. hell they can have a parade about how much they want to burn flags if they wanted.

Yeah, I'm with you on that one. If you wanna seem cool and gnarly swastikas are the way to go. It was just a bunch of stupid ass kids that want to giggle about how totally awesome that was. As you say, were it real Nazi's, they'd have had a protest and burned some flags and shit, not done something like that. I'd like to think that they'd at least do it properly. Making some crappy flags is what drunk kids do when they come up with a spur of the moment 'good' idea.

Actually, swastikas on gravestones is a favourite activity of neo-nazis in Germany.

Don't you find it kind of like....sad. That you even need to guard the memorials. God damn neo-nazi's, they probably don't even realise that they'd be killed by the Nazi's themselves...

Fair enough, what crappy Nazi's. If I was a Nazi, I'd at least do a good job of it.

That was mostly in the 90's. These days, such actions have become very rare indeed. Also, when it happens, it nearly always happens on jewish cemeteries and gravestones. Actually, I can not think of one incident in recent history when Neo-Nazis vandalized a non-jewish cemetery.

Per se, Neo-Nazis will have some respect for soldiers who die in battle, especially when it's about those who died fighting "towel-heads". They also know very well that they will lose sympathy among their supporters if they engage in such activities, and attract the attention of authorities. Bad PR, if you will.

The article doesn't state if those were graves of WWII veterans or those of a later conflict. Or did it ?

Given the circumstances, I think it is rather unlikely that true Neo-Nazis were behind this. Some desillusionized high school kid is more like it.

a shame, still.
