America has sales tax though doesn't it? And it's worse, because they don't add the sales tax until you're at the till. So if you're buying something at a shop, the price you see on the shelf isn't the real one, or something. Correct me if i'm wrong.

And it's different in every state, to make things more confusing.

He wouldn't give you negative feedback, if he did you could do the same informing people of how he makes his money.

Yeah I don't really trust ebay...

My dad's friend bought an SUV for $40,000 on ebay...the guy never gave it to him.

The guy's in jail, but my dad's friend is out $40,000.

It's entirely your fault, and I would never accept returns. You never read the entire auction, that's just your own stupidity. No sympathy for you.

Just wait until the guy gives you positive feedback for being so prompt with payment... then hit him with negative feedback about very small print, and unclear/deceptive terms.

I hate jackasses like you on eBay. You get positive feedback, and you still give negative for not being able to read. It's you idiots who deserve to be banned from eBay.

You're right, save ebay for the people who post deceptively and unclearly. From the way you're talking I'd suspect you're out there selling xbox boxes to people

No, everything I sell is legit. I've fallen for the VAT trick myself, but when I read the auction entirely, it did say. It was my fault. If you don't want to read the auction, then you deserve to pay extra. It DOES say. If you are stupid enough to not read, too bad.

Yes we have sales tax in most areas. Most places do not add the sales tax until you are at the register. Food (like at the grocery store) does not have a sales tax, some junk foods do though. So you are correct in the fact that you have to figure out what the tax will be if you are limited on funds for your purchases. Sales tax does vary from county to county, city to city or state to state. Sales tax in my area is 8.1%. Its really not that hard to figure it out though. Just figure 8 cents for every dollar and $8 for every $100.

Here is the kicker though; If you buy from out-of-state they do not have to charge you sales tax. So if you buy stuff online from a company that is not setup in your state you do not have to pay them sales tax. So buying expensive items from out-of-state can be cheaper, you pay for the shipping/freight instead of paying the higher price plus the local sales tax. Something like a firearm can be a good deal if purchased online. They can cost hundreds of dollars to purchase, but only $25 to ship. So a $600 firearm purchased online will cost you $625, but if you bought it local it would cost you $648.60. Now that is only a difference of $23, but the online seller is usually cheaper than your local guy also. So the savings can really add up quickly. I actually saved over $60 buying an electric range (stove/oven) from New York and having it shipped to me all the way across the country. Go figure, huh?

Private sales (non-business) do not have to charge sales tax.

Added VAT on after I'd clicked buy

Price went from £360 (including postage) to £420

Absolute coques.

I realised after I'd clicked buy it says in VERY small writing at the bottom of the page (yes I know I should have checked more thoroughly but it took some finding even when I was looking for it).

What gets to me though is that you click on "Buy It Now" with a price next to the button.

I expect to be paying this price, I always add on the postage - I'm used to that, but never before have I seen them adding on VAT once you've confirmed to  buy - you can't go back without getting negative feedback (dad doesn't want that on his account )

So yeah...it was my fault...but I'm pissed.
they cannot charge you a VAT, you pay VAT when you import it to your country, file a claim with paypal for exessive shipping charges, they have no other option but to offer you a partial refund.

If they hide it in small text they don't deserve positive feedback.
