I'm sure a few of you have seen the movie "We were Soldiers" starring Mel Gibson.

It's an account of the 1st Air Calvary's first mission in Vietnam.

I was on another forum and found a link to the "After Action Report".

It's 42 pages but includes some photos & diagrams.  I found it pretty interesting reading.

Want to check it out?    http://www.lzxray.com/documents/aar-xray.pdf

Very interesting!

Shame that the movie was another Gibson w**k-a-thon.
I mean his soldiers are getting iced all around him and he's standing there shooting a M16 one handed with a radio in the other..... Dumb.

In the report it states most of the radio operators were killed, along with officers & NCOs wearing stripes.

In the assesment and reccomendations in the end he asks that Officers & NCOs not wear rank insgnia, but should wear "clean sleeves" when going into combat since friendly soldiers KNOW who the leaders are.

It also talks about the accuracy of the enemy.  The majority of wounds were headshots and shots to the upper body.  They weren'y just fighting your run-of-the-mill VC.  These were highly trained, highly motivated troops who may have also been high on drugs.  ( Many of them continued forward after being shot ! )

I guess that's where the argument of "give us 7.62" comes in. I've never been shot by a 7.62 NATO, but by the looks of it. You can't keep on running after getting shot by one of those.

Well....i've never been shot by 5.56 either, so i dunno. Maybe these guys were like those immortals in 300 or something.

Infact, i haven't been shot at all. Just to clear things up.
