How long does it take for your computer to defragment your disk?
4 hours and counting for my vista e6400. Is there a problem here?
I have 320gb of hd space. Is that why it is taking so long?

No, its because you never Defrag.

Takes me 5 hours usually, good thing my defrag can do two drives at once.

It can take aeons if you've never done it before or don't do it very often.

Their website is a bit slow for me, but try Diskeeper - it's very good - not only does a much better job of defragging than windows defrag, it can also run on 'set and forget', where it automatically defrags in the background on a schedule based on fragmentation levels (the more fragmented, the more often it runs) or you can set a specific schedule.

Think about it this way. If you clean up your workspace once a week, what are you going to find? Maybe a bunch of soda cans, junk paper and a rubbish-bin that is dangerously close to needing emptied. About fifteen minutes of ridding up, right? Pile that same kind of junk up, but don't touch it for a month. Over an hour.

A year? Day's project. But what happens if you've never cleaned your desk?

And just like a desk, the less you shuffle a disk's data around (spam installation of junk, etc.), the lower its gunkification rate will be. And the less stuff you have in your desk, the simpler the task of cleaning it will be.

Well, it depends on how much stuff you have on your HD, plus how long it was since you last defragmented.

I defrag very often, and all 4 80GB HDD's defrag within 15 minutes. Use Diskeeper BTW.

If by 'clear up' you mean 'free up' - it can free up some space, but not much.

It's more like the difference between having huge stacks of random bits of paper, or having them neatly sorted into files and filing-cabinets - you don't gain space, but you do work faster.

I've got 750 gigs on three hard drives and haven't defragged in ages, now taking bets on how long it will take...

and I tried your program but it does not seem to work right unless I am mistaken I have XP and ran it in NT mode but when I restart no defrag happens am I doing something wrong?

What he (and I) mean is: is there a way to get diskeeper without buying it?
