Considering how his tax cut plans were aimed at the wealthiest people by far, I'd say big business was the primary reason why he got the Republican nomination. Reagan was just the beginning of a new form of classism in America, because its predecessor was a more singleminded approach to interventionism. By the time the 80s rolled around, materialism was at an all time high while the war drums continued beating.Flecco wrote:
Yeah, they didn't excersise it so much while he was in office though.Turquoise wrote:
It's funny you should say that.... Reagan was really the first president to give unprecedented power to big business in our government.Flecco wrote:
The US presidency has been going downhill since Reagan. I personally would consider Reagan the last true US president. US politics will always have some element of corruption but as it is the lobbyists, corporations and other outside interests have too much power in the legislative and executive wings of the USA.
I'd say the last really good president we had was Eisenhower, but I think Clinton was better than Reagan.
Roosevelt. The USA needs a Roosevelt. Then again it was around then that the Federal Reserve system got fucked up so maybe not.
The interventionism of Eisenhower was far more calculated and sensible than that of most of his successors, including Reagan.
Nowadays, you'd think we'd learn our lesson that the last 50 years have mostly proven that interventionism is a grave mistake....
