In July I'm flying to Washington state. Any advice from you frequent fliers? On the way out, I have only one connection in Cincinnati, Ohio with a layover of 2.5 hours. On the way back I’ll have a connection in Boise, ID with a 3 hour layover and a connection in the twin cities with only a 1.5 hour layover.

I’m flying out of Madison, WI which seems like it would be a little more quiet than most. Anyone flown into or out of Cincinnati, Boise, or the twin cities? I was told by an American Airlines pilot that I know to ask the flight attendant for permission to say hi to the pilots since it’s my first time flying. Have any of you done that?

Flying on an Embraer ERJ-135 (37 seater) to Cincinnati, Boeing 737-800 to Seattle/Tacoma. On the way back, Dehavilland Dash 4 Prop to Boise, Airbus Industrie (not sure what model, probably not the big A380) to the twin cities, and then another Airbus to Madison.

I recommend having some saltines to munch on if motion sickness has ever been an issue.

In a post 9-11 world I wouldn't recommend doing anything that the other passengers dont do.

Usually one of the pilots greets the passengers when boarding or exiting in my experience. Probably looking for crazies.

Well, fellow cheesehead, your run into Minneapolis will be the worst. My suggestion is to study the airport terminal maps prior to your flights, so you get a good idea of where your heading in case of ground, flight, or any other inevitable delay that will occur. IF you don't get time to study the layouts, the planes will usually have the airport layouts in the back of the flight magazine located in the back of the seat ahead of you.

Sea/Tac is a very nice airport, and easy to get around in. If you have time, stop at Antonio's fish bar at the airport. They have a pretty damn good salmon and chips plate.

As for the planes, have fun on the Embrier, it's a can with wings. The 737-800 model is a very nice rig, and will be a decent flight. Not as noisy as the others. You also can't go wrong with the airbus. Very good aircraft.

Have a safe flight there and back.

Forgot to mention, I typically get to the AP about an hour ahead of the flight. Wear shoes that are easy on/easy off for security, and have your id and tickets handy at all times. Generally, if your flying on a weekend, it's going to be worse regarding traffic and people. If you plan to much on the plane, buy your sandwiches and drinks prior to flight, (in the terminal, after security). The charges on board are a rip off.

What airline are you flying? The Dash 4 will be a very bumpy flight due to mountain waves sometimes, so be prepared.

If you trip is short, then try to get away with packing light -1 bag that is small enough to fit in the overhead bin (no luggage to check or for them to lose) = Big timesaver.

Try to get an aisle or window seat.

If you are prone to motion sickness take some ginger pre-flight .

Make sure that you leave the sword you call a pocketknife at home.

Wear some comfortable clothes

Have somebody drop/pick you up so you wont have to pay for parking

Chew gum during the flight. It helps with the whole ear popping experience.

Get there early -security checkpoint lines can be long. Bring a good book.

Don't say the word bomb.

Don't leave your bag unattended.

Enjoy the flight. Keep your seat belt as much as possible, and look out the window.

and remember when your going through security in the US, you cant have large bottles of liquid or gel. If you want to bring these things on they have to be in 3 ounce or under containers. However, you can have as many bottle of this size as you want

I’ve never been motion sick in a car or boat, but perhaps I’ll bring some crackers. Isn’t there a pill you can take? My flight out of Madison is at 11:30am so I’ve got plenty of time to be early.

Yeah, the Embrier looked like a pretty small jet. Ah well, the more excitement the better. I’m flying out on a Thursday, back on a Sunday. Thanks for the tip on stuff to munch on. Figured it’d be downright robbery to buy stuff on the plane.

I’m only going to be out there for 2 days so I’ll be able to get away with a small bag. I’m getting a window seat if I can. Thanks for the tip on ginger and I’ll leave my swiss army knife on my dresser. Do you know what size carry on stuff has to be?
